How do you clean your counters?

We use Lysol wipes on our fake granite counter.

Mrs. Meyers Clean Day multi-purpose every day spray. I buy the concentrate in bulk and generally do a double dilution (so half as much as they recommend using). It smells nice and is gentle on the counters. I like that the smell also helps eliminate any food smells that otherwise cling to surfaces. We cook a lot including lots of heavier, spicy foods like Indian curries, chili, barbecue, etc., and you really have to be vigilant about cleaning if you don't want that stale food smell around. I also use this spray on cabinets. I use a soft cotton dishtowel to wipe things down.

Sometimes I also just switch to a vinegar solution. I did that when we briefly had an issue with ants, as it is really good at repelling bugs. But once we solved the ant issue, I switched back because I don't like the vinegar smell all the time. Even when you dilute, add lemon, and use a slightly better smelling vinegar, it really lingers. I also think it's harder on stone counters.

Of course, you could also do what my DH does, which is that when he finishes doing the dishes he just gets his hands wet and then wipes them across the counters. So the counters are not only still dirty, but also conveniently very wet. I love coming home with groceries to discover he has done this. I don't even care if he uses the spray but could he at least use a sponge or something absorbent so the counters aren't covered in dirty water? I do not understand.

I fill one of my mixing bowls with warm/hot water and dish soap - dump in a dish towel, wring it out and clean my counters nightly.

Do you prepare food directly on your countertop? I sure don’t.

Why yes, I do. I have granite countertops and can cut on them, put hot things on them - they're great. I sure don't want 409 or some other sprayed chemical going into my food. Any food surface should be clean, no matter if you put food directly on it or not. Your hands touch the chemical counter and then touch the food.

I use dishwashing liquid on a paper towel.

I haven't had to reseal my granite in 20+ years. It still has a glossy finish.

Dish soap and water is fine. We go a little extra with this homemade mix in spray bottle.:

1/2 cup rubbing alcohol,
1/2 teaspoon mild dish soap,
1 1/2 cups warm water.

LOL. What an image. WTH is wrong with men? I once dated a guy who didn't buy cleaning supplies or paper towels and thought you could just get a bathroom clean with some toilet paper and water.. mebbe a little windex. Dumped.
