So now that we are literally campaign fodder for immigration, what next?

It may be a long border, but sending them back is a deterrent

Republicans have no fix for immigration just like they had no fix for healthcare. They have only divisive and dishonest rhetoric.

You're right, but it's also an election winning position.

I don't blame them. Coastal elitists should share the burden that border states get hammered with. Blue states want the policies so gotta pitch in to deal with the consequences.

Of course Texas has the room. If they need the money, they should absolutely receive federal help. Money for every immigrant taken in.

The size of a state does not matter. The amount of habitable land does. Which is why these people congregate and overcrowd areas of wherever they end up - they go where the resources are.

It is the cost of having such a large amount of unvetted immigrants. Everything from healthcare to schooling takes resources away from tax paying citizens, not to mention the criminal element. My nephew worked border patrol, and people have no idea, NO IDEA, who is trying to cross our border - it's not just a bunch of poor, oppressed people hoping for jobs and a better life for them and their children, not by a longshot.

Not only is it not a cost that DC isn't paying, it's also not a cost that the wealthy are paying. I'm in a middle class school district here in VA. DD had 4 kids come in last fall who were new migrants who don't speak English. They still don't speak English. I feel really bad for these kids who were just thrown into a class with very few supports and are expected to just learn how to speak English in order to do homework. Other schools nearby really struggle with this problem and their schools are now failing. They just realistically can't get these kids up to grade level and can't do it quickly enough to not impact scores.

The agricultural industry will be happy, they need people too.

We have a labor shortage people.

No, we have an issue with employers not paying a living wage.

Shame on you for supporting a wave of undocumented workers who will let employers keep the status quo with regard to low wages.

Or we could just enforce our borders. I don’t see why Texas is expected to take in migrants but not DC.

PP you replied to. We ALL agree on that, but the border is one of the longest in the world and just impossible to secure. High walls were possibly a good idea, but you've seen how easily people can still get across, and how much of it we'd need to build and maintain. Plus, there are conservation areas there, and bodies of water.

We need to act on ALL the options we have: border enforcement is only one of our tools. Being nasty to the illegal immigrants that have been in the country for years and paid taxes is unnecessarily punitive, when we've all benefited from their labor. So the answer has to depend on which illegal immigrant we're talking about, how long they've been there and how they've comported themselves.

Illegal immigrants in good standing should be encouraged to settle in all states that have the room, with subsidies for those states.

- legal immigrant.

Or we could just not let these people enter our country to begin with.

What part of long border/impossible to secure do you not understand?

Do you want to talk to Border Patrol in Texas? They'll tell you about it.

This is a total cop-out. Of course, we will never stop 100% of the illegal immigrants, but did you see the road blocks put up by big business and their Congressional BFFs when Trump tried to enforce border laws? And even with all of the pushback, he lowered crossings substantially. We currently have 200,000 crossers each MONTH (the size of a moderate city).

Yeah, remain in Mexico and applying for asylum from the next safe country (or your own) is what makes sense if you want a border. Or we need a national ID and no services besides emergency room (and deportation processing) without it ..and then up the work visa quota , and yes pay the workers properly. But they are seasonal or whatnot. It's not immediate immigration and they don't bring their families. They invest in back home.

California is a border state and has been dealing with these issues for over a century. Or did u forget that?

Really? How TF can we ‘protect our borders?’ Even Trump didn’t manage that, even with all his hate for non-white immigration. The fastest growing number of illegal immigrants is not Mexican, should we build a wall around the entire boarders of the US?

And DC cannot accept them because we are smaller and they can’t afford to live here anyway but I guess it doesn’t matter because they’ll live in MD or VA anyway…

Just FYI, the first bus of migrants from Texas arrived this morning at 8:00 a.m. and were dropped off in front of Union Station. The 30 persons on board were from Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia and Nicaragua. Each person checked in with immigration as departing the bus, and then had their wristbands cut off when they left.
