Swimming JOs - really is too bad we can’t have 1 spectator per athlete

So multiple teams there, tons of swimmer coaches etc on the pool deck. And the stands were packed shoulder to shoulder with spectators. Why is it ok for college meets to have spectators when a kids’ meet at the same pool doesn’t even let you in the building? It’s getting really old to have to try to explain to my young kid how to navigate a building they’ve never been in before to find their team area, where to go when it’s time to leave, etc. Does Covid not visit NCAA meets? I hate when policies lack common sense.

My child is a college swimmer in a warm weather state and they do not allow spectators at meets even though they swim outside. So it's not an NCAA thing, it's a covid-denying governor thing.

Not GMU. I've been there for multiple meets. It is mask-required at all times. University-wide policy: https://recreation.gmu.edu/about-us/returnplan/

I’m not sure what GMU’s mask policy has to do with the fact that spectators were packed in the stands for a college invitational, but I was there back in December when I saw the packed stands. Yes people were masked, but packed in like sardines and yelling. Northam was still governor then.

Maybe they were charging spectators to watch that invitational meet. That could explain the difference in policies. If the university sees a chance to make some money they’ll certainly take it.

EXACTLY!

Ehh, not the same. Swim meets have a bunch more athletes as compared to basketball games, with a lot less square footage on the pool deck. My guess is they’ll need the stands to spread out swimmers.

But why do the swimmers need to be disrespected fed? They are required to be masked when not in the water: there is no distancing in schools or anywhere else for that matter.

I mean why do the swimmers need to be distanced!

Because they aren't always masking while waiting their turn and these kids are in school, traveling and multiple activities so its a hotbed for covid.

Covid... really? I don't want your selfish family giving our careful family covid.

You know they are swimming together not distanced and not masked right?

And there are other sports where they play unmasked…basketball for example.

And swimmers wait until it is their turn to remove masks. So they are not really unmasked at all during the meet, hence why the need for all the distancing.

Yes, that's why we pulled our from swim for a few weeks while things surge. But, its 50 kids per group vs. 200-300+ per meet plus families.

Also pointing out the mini meet championship allows a spectator.

But what is the difference between this and college meets? Everyone’s eligible to be vaccinated. At this point they shouldn’t be treating club meets different from college meets.

What mini meet championship allows spectators? This has all been a cluster. Some clubs allowing one spectator, other clubs operating meets in the same jurisdiction saying no spectators. There is no logic being applied to these rules.

Where do you see there are spectators allowed? I just looked at the meet info

Credentials: Parents not working the meet as a deck official or volunteer timer/runner are not permitted on deck. Only athletes, USA Swimming certified coaches, and deck officials will be permitted on the deck. Coaches and Officials should have proof of active USA Swimming membership with them at all times.

This is a PVS guideline. I have yet to see or hear of a single meet allowing spectators.

I had heard that RMSC meets were allowing 1 spectator per athlete, but I don’t know of any other club allowing spectators.
