For 2 years, when the community needed him most, he just didn't seem to care. At all. Almost like he just couldn't be bothered.

I would give McKnight a C-. Lots to improve on, but she's working.

Smith got a failing grade: F

Agree completely. Smith did not care AT ALL.

Agree that Smith didn't GAF. It was pretty obvious when he announced his last day would be June 1, rather than June 30 / July 1. He complained that living in the pandemic was "hard" with his wife being gone helping with the grandchild. He was mentally checked out.

I guess he thought the pandemic was easy for all the kids doing Zoom school??

God, that was so frustrating. To listen people to talk about how all their children were suffering and struggling, and his responses would be about his grandchild in Maine. So insensitive.

And put it on top of his nonsense slogan of 'All means All'. Apparently not. All apparently does not include children or families that face different problems than his family.

I remember one BOE meeting where he was leaning back casually in an arm chair in his den. Like, come on man, at least have the decency to be in your office and sit properly.

You are the typical stereotype when people think of MCPS parents. Do you even hear yourself? It’s just so embarrassing.

DP

What? To actually have a super who even just pretended to care about our kids?

You know what was embarrassing? The way Smith kept our schools closed for over a year, based on the condition of his grandson in another state.

Why? Because Smith was a white man?

Careful, your racism is showing.

At least my kid’s schools have been open this year. The bus issues have been corrected. I appreciate the weekly updates. McKnight inherited a MESS from Smith. In the middle of a pandemic, no less. She’s doing a decent job and is way better than Smith.

I would think McKnight appeals more to the hyper-privileged set since she caves to their whims so quickly. At least with Smith he made tough calls and kept everyone safe by sticking with guidance from the professionals instead of listening to a loud minority of parents.

What professional advice is McKnight not following?

What on earth are you talking about? Most parents supported virtual for the 2020-2021 school year. We had virtual.

Most parents support in-person for the 2021-2022 school year, yes, even during Omicron, *since most kids have been in-person during January*. Most of us, thankfully, have had in-person. The only "loud minority of parents" that's happening right now are the ones screaming for virtual. This idea that it's the "hyper-privileged set" only who wants their kids in-person isn't supported by any evidence. Newsflash: the "hyper-privileged set" send their kids to private.

Smith seem so absolutely checked out during the past year and he kept bringing up his grandson and his educational and health needs in meetings and it was clear that I think he was ready to retire.

I think that's what OP is looking for. Him to come back and have the district go virtual because of his grandson in another state, then entirely check out thereafter.

Smith knew there was no way to please everyone and every decision would be castigated, and so didn't put a lot of emotional energy into any one of them.

She also effectively stood up to Elrich on behalf of the students after her self-imposed color coding mistake. Course-correcting on that mistake in the first place was impressive leadership. Many leaders would arrogantly carry on. We saw that phenomenon last year with MCPS and DHHS leadership.

She what now? I’m going to need a link or some proof. What did Elrich have to do with that dumb system?

The missteps, miscommunication, and backtracking around the color-coding system are big reasons why Elrich said things were chaotic and the district needed to take a pause. But she/MCPS didn't buckle and kept nearly the entire district in-person.

NP, and I agree. She’s been much better than Smith. She made a mistake and moved past it—I’m not saying she’s done everything well, but what did Smith do well, exactly?

Elrich is a fool. He should have stayed the f out of the school issues, especially since he wasn’t doing a damn thing to control spread in the community. Bars and restaurants were open but he thought schools should “take a pause”? Bite me.

This feels like the one thing almost everyone can get behind. The man is a joke.

This quote above reinforces the fact that DCUM is not reality, out of touch with the real-world. Elrich is popular with the majority in the county, that's why he's leading the poll by a wide margin.

LOL you mean like the way he "retired" from Calvert County Public Schools because of his grandchild? He used the same excuse when he got caught handing out bonuses under the table there.

And he isn't retired. He's back to work.

Criticism of Dr. McKnight’s obvious missteps is not racism and it’s despicable to claim otherwise.

You sound racist. They didn't post abotu race but Smith was just as bad. Your kids schools were open last year.

You can retire from a job and then take another. Nothing wrong with that.
