I somehow feel that you are not too concerned about being a pain. The poster in question was upset by what many would agree is a clear contradiction if not outright hypocrisy: a man who has chosen a childless celebrate life criticizing other childless adults. The poster further listed other reasons that they did not hold that individual or the institution that he leads in very high esteem. The poster then concluded with, "I am done with Catholics". It was really only the last line that was problematic. Contrary to the OP of this thread and, apparently you, I don't see that entire post as being aimed at attacking Catholics but rather leveling criticisms at the Pope and Catholic Church as an institution.

In contrast, your post was purely an act of bad faith posting. You targeted an innocent party, were not engaging in any discussion relevant to the forum, and were essentially trolling.

An experiment is not “bad faith” and it is not “trolling.” I do research for a living, at a place you’ve heard of and respect. I do experiments all the time. I was demonstrating a double standard, and the demonstration was pretty effective.

Pew reports that 93% of trolls say that they aren't trolling.

Now I really want to know of this is a real stat

You should name the the place so that I would know not to take any of their research seriously. I cannot believe how obtuse you have been about this. In most cases, you simply cannot take a criticism about one religion and change the name of a religion and claim that the two things are equal. As has been pointed out by others in this thread, there are few to no counterparts to the Catholic Church as an institution. Religions overlap with culture, politics, and other aspects of societies. They are not easily interchangeable. Your "experiment" proved nothing and was completely worthless. The fact that you continue to believe otherwise does you no credit whatsoever.

You probably believe that your thread was deleted because you made criticisms of Muslims. In fact, it was deleted because it was not an attempt at discussion, but rather aimed at provoking a response. Posting to generate a response rather than valid discussion is practically the definition of trolling.

Nope, not going to out myself just because you ask. And I won’t divulge the ivies that gave me my several degrees, either. Your constant and childish insults mean nothing to me. If I were you, I’d be embarrassed about all your pointless snark.

I asked about BANNING trolls, not simply deleting their threads. (Who’s being deliberately obtuse?) Because you did immediately ban me. Yet plenty of trolls remain in the religion forum, like the poster with the made-up story about Catholics and handshakes, who made at least 3 really obvious errors in a single OP. If alleged trolling (it was an experiment) is grounds for banning me, why are there still many trolls in the religion forum?

Anyone following this discussion should really see this thread:

The previous poster apparently thinks the OP of the thread should be banned and the thread deleted because...well, I don't know why. It's apparently anti-Catholic or something.

PP, that is a harmless apocryphal story. None of us has evidence that the OP of the thread was not told that story by the Archbishop. Among the "3 really obvious errors" are spelling "Archbishop" as "Arch Bishop", the anachronistic use of "handshake" in a period in which kisses were used as greetings, and something about succession which is actually pretty close to Catholic tradition so not a "really obvious error".

I am reaching the limits of my patience with both you and this thread. So, maybe take one more shot at presenting your case and I'll put this thread to rest.

My last shot:

- You can’t or won’t give a reason why you banned me but not other so-called trolls. (And if you don’t think that thread is a troll, there are plenty others.)
- I’m not the only one on that thread who thinks that was a troll. You said above that you don’t think Catholics are targeted, but I’m not even Catholic and I can see it.
- Maybe check other posts from the author of that thread and see if you still think they’re sincere. Maybe they are, but if history serves, this is just another troll.
- it’s not about single threads or even single posts. What makes it hard to have real discussions on the Religion forum is all the posters who do micro-trolls, if you will, that derail entire threads.

Sayonara. I was guessing you’d find a reason to let that ridiculous thread stay, and you didn’t disappoint.

PS. Clearly the forum helps drive traffic and revenue, so why would you clean it up?

In 3…2…1…. you launch some more insults at me and then lock the thread so I can’t respond. Well, it’s your forum.

If being annoying was enough to get people banned, DCUM wouldn’t exist.

But thanks for showing everyone the low standard of your participation in the Religion forum.

OP - how do you participate on the religion forum?

What threads have you started?

Which discussions have you joined?

Were you respectful and thoughtful?

FYI to all followers of this thread. As I am sure Jeff can confirm, I am the OP -- and I haven't posted anything on this thread since yesterday. My only post on this thread beyond Page 1 was a brief one thanking Jeff for removing the thread that I was complaining about.
