Outdoor lunch

That was my thinking all last year when everyone was telling schools to buy tents and have school outdoors.

Wait wait wait … all DCPS schools got heaters for outdoor lunch?

Oyster-Adams also does lunch outside, but no heaters

They ordered heaters without having a plan of how to power them?

I'm not sure who "they" is - but perhaps the PTA ordered them without fully thinking it through, operationally.

Or, maybe the electrical is supposed to be able to handle them, but in fact can't.

I hope it's the latter, but even that would be embarrassing. Everyone knows that electric heating draws a lot of power. They should have checked the amperage before spending money on such a purchase.

They were definitely paid for out of PTA funds, so it isn’t really a problem for anyone except the Janney families who give to the PTA if the money was wasted. But hopefully they’ll find a way to make them work at some point soon.

No, they were not. DCPS provided the heaters.

Huh, that's interesting and surprising news -- I was certain this was another example of Janney buying something nice for ourselves that the rest of the city couldn't get. Of course, the unfortunate part is that... they don't work. But that's why I made sure my kids wore their jackets to school today.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a high of 27. I wonder if the kids will still eat outside.

Lunch lasts 15 minutes and if it curbs the spread why wouldn't they? This is important whether you care about your kid getting sick or you care about them missing school due to COVID/COVID close contact or both.

My kid at Janney was told they would eat inside tomorrow.

Phew. When it is too cold outside, my kid won’t eat abs then has a horrible afternoon cause they’re hungry and moody.

Ludlow-Taylor also has DCPS supplied heaters, but DCPS didn’t supply generators and the school can’t handle the power load even if it were logistically feasible to plug them in. We have yet to have lunch outside despite tons of space. I understand the weather now is very challenging, but there’s really no excuse for pre-break when it was rarely intemperate.

I'm even more concerned that they said all the enrichment classes would be outside, too! That's longer than lunch and it's a sedentary activity for my kid. I was assuming it would be indoors. They can stay masked for it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. They will not have things outdoors if the weather goes much below freezing. We have already been informed that lunch is inside tomorrow because of the freezing temperatures. The adults in the school generally have good judgement. Just dress the kids warm and they will be ok.

I would be real mad about that as an LT parent. You have a ton of outdoor space.

To be honest, now that my kids are vaccinated and not at risk of quarantines anymore, I wouldn't care that much if they ate inside. Everybody will get Omicron eventually, it's not a question of if but when. But I guess it's better to spread it out so the numbers don't give them reason to close schools.

Agree w you except I like to believe we all won’t get omnicron. I’m not saying my belief is based in anything other than foolish hope. We are prepared as a family to get it knowing we just need otc meds and time.

Our kids eat outside unless temp is below a certain amount. If they eat inside the face forward and have a certain amount of space. Masks are up for chewing and down to put food in. The way my kids make it sound is it’s a military procedure.

We are accepting the risk.

What a shocking and depressing misinterpretation of the phrase "actively eating."

Having lunch outside today or tomorrow is child abuse. Crazy parents demanding lunch outside should go try it for yourself.

Child abuse? Get ahold of yourself please.
