School closure after break?

If there are no subs and no extra staff they have to close. I mean I guess they could pull special education teachers and deny iep services to kids to keep classrooms open.

I'd gladly skip my child's IEP services, which in the event of a closure would be provided virtually and be virtually useless (haha), in order for those teachers to help keep the school open!

Well I’m sure the school would have you sign a legal waiver so that you couldn’t sue.

Central office will continue to work from home “where it’s safe” and there won’t be any parental uproar although those are the people who should be subbing in classes for their kids.

Is this a possibility? I’d happily sub in my children’s classrooms if their teachers had to quarantine. This is a good idea. Much easier to take a week or two off of work vs having kids home and distance learning indefinitely. My elementary schoolers got nothing out of distance learning and it was terrible for my work productivity.

Emotionally and socially, my 16 year old desperately wants school to be back in-person after the break. Last year was tough and isolating. I honestly think our family will be facing mental health challenges of school switches right virtual. And I believe even a temporary switch to virtual is a slippery slope because I don’t trust dcps to prioritize the needs of students and children.

Are you suggesting that the whole school needs to go virtual so that you can keep your positive test secret? That’s nuts. No one will judge you for testing positive. SMH

I did NOT gather that from what he or she said at all.

Then what did you gather from her first sentence? I thought it was pretty clear that she meant that if she got Covid and only her class was shut down instead of the entire school, it would be obvious that she had Covid. I do think that is probably true assuming she would be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms and would be teaching virtually (in what situation would you do that except to isolate?), but I don't think anyone would judge her for it. So many people are testing positive right now, nobody in their right mind would think it's a moral failure.

Teachers get judged for literally anything. I can guarantee that there will be people judging her.

I've given up on our background checks (to become volunteers), we submitted fingerprints TWICE and I'm not going to a tiny shop now during Omicron unless I need to. But two months for background checking and processing a sub doesn't seem insane to me.

You won’t go into a “tiny shop” to get fingerprinted because of Omicron but you sent your kid to an Omicron infested building last week for 3 days of substitutes and busy work..

I thought PP was suggesting that central office staff should be serving as subs.

If you won’t go to a “tiny shop” to get your finger prints somehow I doubt you’d actually come to a giant school building with unvaccinated children either. 👀

Really?? Calling BS here. Schools have been calling out for subs all fall - complete shortage. If you would happily sub - go get certified and do it. Please!

https://dcps.dc.gov/page/substitute

Once you get certified, you can control where/when/how much you sub. Go!

Subs can get fingerprinted in multiple locations - I did the UPS store in Columbia Heights.

Sorry - should have read all the comments before I posted. I am a sub and while the process was more lengthy then expected - it was well run and proceeded pretty quickly. Hopefully, they are trying to expedite right now. And you get a free Capitol bikeshare membership. There are even healthcare benefits for long term subs. And the staff & teachers are very appreciative. Most of the students/parents too.

Everyone advocating shut downs needs answer for the negative effects of last year. You also need to provide, in detail, how reopening is going to happen. You all saw the games that the WTU played to keep schools closed once they were shut down. Why would it be different this time?

Also, you need to recognize that what you are doing is having severe negative effects on a generation of children:

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/587041-officials-warn-crisis-over-childrens-mental-health-worsens-amid-pandemic?rl=1

In short, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
