Yesterday, we decided to get our DCPS teen Student boosted. Student works Saturday, it needed to be Sunday. When we arrived at the Meridian site (only walk in site we could find), line was at least several blocks long.

I too would like a plan and a policy in place. But the starting point should not be shifting all schools to virtual because of outbreaks at a few. I am quite sure it will be our school’s turn at some point, but I’m not seeing the case #s that warrant a closure at our ES and don’t think there’s a conspiracy to cover them up. I would like some sort of metric for closures, test to return (if they can get us all tests), and test to stay. The Twitter echo chamber and PG county’s decision is sending me right back to august 2020, and I’m not feeling good about where we’re headed.

I don't want to go with until a bunch of kids and teachers are infected. This isn't just a minor cold. And the more we transmit it the more opportunities there are for mutation.

It's clearly heading in the direction of mass spread. Why are you ignoring that?

If you are a parent and not a teacher, just keep your kids home (and obviously get them vaccinated if eligible). No one will care if you keep them home. I'm sure DC Council will extend their legislation saying that anyone can just keep kids home without education if they just say "BUT COVID."

But, you aren't an epidemiologist, and should like stop talking out of your azz about your predictions.

I really don't like that twitter moms have some apparent influence on schools openings in DC. Particularly since they seem to 1) have no background in public health or policy, 2) seem to only represent a select risk preference (that being extreme covid risk avoidance at the expense of all else), 3) largely able to be on twitter all day (suggesting free time that a lot of us don't have, which suggests a SAH parent), 4) largely white and upper-SES.

Everyone old enough to be in Kindergarten-12th grade is approved to receive a vaccine. Enough.

Can I ask a hypothetical? Co worker tested positive. I found out this morning, and despite my best efforts (10 stores, 4 different pay places), couldn’t find anywhere to get a rapid test. Got a nice scratch in my throat, but this week is a leave restriction week. I have a class of 25, maybe 1/2 are vaxxed. What seems like the best choice from a public health standpoint?

The problem is only half yuor class is vaxed. Keep on teaching.

Again, not sure what the panic is about. If you have een vaccinated then breakthroughs are very mild. Get vacinated. Do not close schools. COvid is never going away. How many of these break through cases are serious?

Be careful with your terminology. "Mild" meaning no death or hospitalization is very different from how most people use the word mild colloquially. Do you think that ongoing impacts like fatigue out shortness of breath are mild? It's not a cold. Turn off Fox News.

+1 I’m a teacher who just tested positive who is very healthy and runs daily. I can barely move, 101+ fever, throat on fire, etc

Oh man. I'm not sure what new source you are getting YOUR information from, but many many sources are reporting the omicron (particularly) is "mild", particularly amongst the vaccinated.

Yes, and right now there are hundreds of teachers out with the flu. This isn’t a sustainable model for the next few weeks

Where’d you get that number?

Our charter has outlined an universal "test to return" policy for January including the dates the PCR test must be taken, how to submit results, and options/information for anyone who doesn't want to test. They (smartly) did not try to limit it base on travel/vax status - it applies to all people (students, teachers, staff). Obviously its not perfect (as it's possible to test on a Friday, and become infected on a Sunday) but it's a really good, common-sense way to start the next year.
