At least have it available for those who want it or judge it best for their kids.
I don't understand the parents who are dead set against this. Who are you?

You have that option available already. DCPS is not punishing anybody for keeping their kids home “because Covid”. Who are you that you want to impose this choice on those who judge it best for their kids to be in school?

Can you please explain what it means to "impose a choice"? Choose to keep your kids in school? Like you're mad that you'd have to make a decision?

No. Making everyone virtual for two weeks bc you want to keep your kids home is forcing your choice on everyone.

The option of some kids being virtual and some not is not on the table, and is logistically infeasible, as has been explained ad infinitum in the discussions around concurrent or allowing virtual at every school.

With the rates of teachers being out for quarantine I think my kids would get better instruction from them virtually than the do-nothing substitutes they frequently have.

That’s nice. Not everyone thinks like you. Or has kids that learn well at all from anyone in a virtual setting.

Half of folks with Covid show no symptoms. So -‘you and your child have a really good chance of never knowing you have had Covid. Unless you test all the time - which you can’t - because of the scarcity of the kits.

Deep breathe - unless they are fat - they will be fine.

No, not just fat. If they are not metabolically healthy as well, which unfortunately is a good chunk of kids here since for lunch they get lunchables, pizza, chips, and all the other fake foods.

You may not have a choice.

Do you see what you sound like?

I said ‘not just fat,’ not that they don’t matter. I was adding to what kinds of kids are at risk.

Anonymous wrote:What’s the current DCPS policy on returning to school after a quarantine? Test after day 5 or stay home for 10 days? I’d like to see some combination of that to return to school. Give out the library PCR test kits outside of school if possible.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, there is not an organization in this city that is worse at contingency planning than DCPS central office. We all knew there would be a winter surge and they should have had plans in place to implement stricter testing regimes, class/grade/school-wide quarantines, short term pivots to virtual, etc. It is so frustrating to want to support public education in this city while it is so poorly organized.

If you are home because you have covid, you must stay home for 10 days following the day you tested positive. If you're unvaccinated and a close contact, you can test on day 5 and go back on day 8. But now that 5-11 is likely right at or finally over 2 weeks post second dose, you don't have to quarantine for a close contact.

I'm all about covid precautions; however, I do not think we shoud rely on rapid tests, they're misused. We need to do more PCR testing. That has been pretty reliable with same day results.

I will not have my kid undergo rapid testing every other day like others suggested. My kid is neuro diverse and will not handle nasal swabs. My PK4 kid cannot handle nasal swabs. It's not possible. They need to continue with the saliva PCR test.

I'm going to keep debunking this lie every time I see it, no matter how much the whiners moan about it.

My friend's healthy, thin sixth grade son spent six days in the hospital with COVID.

No one wants virtual. It is horrible for all involved but the omnicron is raging, people won’t (we are) canceling their Christmas plans. It is horrible - we saw grandparents and my brother last year because we all quarantined and tested. This year that won’t be enough - also timing w kid in school.

We have all stopped going to the office which we just started doing and won’t until a week or two after the break. Kids can be in person and we lessen our family’s exposure.

I hate working from home by the way. But last week cleaned out my office.

Demand your offices go back to virtual. Feds aren’t back in full yet. I keep hearing these two conflicting events: employers fear the great resignation and employees are scared to be back in person. Ummmmmm….. which is it? Your boss doesn’t want you to quit or you boss can put you at risk for this virus.

I’m seeing families traveling this weekend - unmasked (hopefully just for the photo) in low vax parts of the country. Now they can return w their fully vaxxed kids the next day. It’s really gross now that omnicron is raging.

Keep schools open by stopping restaurants and unnecessary travel etc. go see grandma but come back early and test.

And DCPS should have better planning, better testing. DCPS is the opposite prepared. I see us shutting down around mlk and saying they moved winter break or some BS.

Could people please start shaming the non vaccinated?

I highly doubt any person on DCUM is not vaccinated. People on here are “nuts” but I don’t think anyone would not be without good reason. On our social circle people haven’t been boosted for scheduling reasons, wanting a day after for potential side effects.

But I keep hearing about a brother in law who doesn’t believe in covid even though his mom died from it and these same people who complain try to figure out 2,000 ways to see them. Stop doing this. All this covid comes back to us and in turn our school.

My sister-in-law stopped speaking to her twin because the twin married an anti-vaxxer. After 8 months of not seeing her or speaking she caved and was vaxxed and could visit. The plague rat husband is still not welcome.

Parents who want to keep their kids home should go ahead and do that. I believe that the schools will be tolerant of that. No one will judge you. More testing would indeed be good but they also need to provide the resources for schools to test, includong staff. They also need a vaccine mandate for 5-12 at the very least to participate in extra curricular activities. The 5-12 vaccine is widely available.

+1

Especially for this week

I do have friends who are forced w kids home this week (closures) and they are pissed.

Also need mandate for boosters for teachers and staff. It would be reasonable to add to the daily tracker a question about whether families have travelled during the break and have those families provide a negative covid test or proof of vaccination of the child before returning.
