My kid got into Amherst with a 3.7 no sports hooks, full pay. Other sorta hook was that she was able to join the orchestra with a somewhat rarer instrument. Private school that definitely doesn’t inflate given she was in the top 10% of her class (school didn’t disclose actual rank). |
Wait, people aren't both complaining that they can't afford $70k without aid and that some full pay students get a break in admissions? |
| Bumping this thread. If your DD is around 3.7W in FCPS, where do you think they have a chance. The other threads in this forum on HPS-type schools made me want to re-raise this thread. |
What SAT/ACT or TO? |
A 3.7 at my DC’s school are the kids applying to Ivies. Big3 private. I wouldn’t assume this was a public school kid. |
How much did you receive in scholarships from Dayton, if I might ask? |
How many APs? |
|
The private school thing is totally different right.”?
I am assuming the pp whose kid got into Amherst and the other one whose friends are applying to ivies - those are unweighted gpas right? |
Yes. |
| Private versus public matters. If your kid is at a school where half the class has 4.0 or above, like a lot of the big public schools post-Covid, 3.7 isn’t going to give a lot of options. If your kid is at a competitive private that didn’t grade inflate in Covid, 3.7 gives a lot more options. |

Yes private makes a difference, full pay makes a difference, and SLACs make a difference.
My 3.3 GPA, top area private kid, got into a top 15 SLAC, full pay. |
| Forgot to add. Kid now has a 3.9+ at said SLAC as a junior. Is involved in several ECs in College. Has interned for two US Senators and a Public Interest Org. Sometimes you just gotta give a kid a chance. Look at SLACs, more holistic I think. |
Yes, I think if OP asked about UW, she would get more relevant responses. |
maybe it was private. Private 3.7 at Tufts is not uncommon |
Well that's obvious. The big 3 are on the 4.0 system. And 3.7s even on that system shouldn't be applying to Ivies unless they are hooked. We are talking here about the public system which often goes up to 4.7 and beyond. |
