In our league, the kid gets put into a hat and randomly drawn.

Is this just something you are pondering? How are we supposed to know?

In ours you just get entered in the pool. Telling people not to take their kids to the tryouts is one way some coaches try to get around the draft. It doesn't work because every other coach will suspect it.

I'm in Alexandria where the boys U10 and up have a draft (none for girls). We are divided by district, and we are given a list of numbers/names to use for the draft of the boys that age assigned to that district. If your kid doesn't show up to the assessment, their name is still on the list which means he will get assigned to a team "blind" so he is either assigned to a team or someone just goes ok I will take kid 123, whoever that is (usually this happens at the very end). There usually are a handful of kids who don't show up, whether it is intentional, they're sick or their parents forgot.

If you mean what happens if you sign up for rec late, after the draft has occurred, you would need to call the rec registration people to see if your kid can be assigned to a team. If a coach is willing to take additional players after a draft usually it can work.

Multi-year rec coach (McLean) 4-6 grade girls until 2020.

Teams were 8/9 players (7/8 in 4th grade which is played 4v4). Players were required to play 2 interrupted quarters per game.

All players were required to attend an evaluation and the coaches drafted. If your daughter wanted to play with friends, you had to coach and just go down the board and pick her friends (although it wasn't guaranteed). Some coaches did that, most didn't.

I think it was the ideal set up. Did have a couple games where we had to play with 4, but the league was generally well balanced and all the kids got their playing time, yet the coaches still had the opportunity to dole out additional playing time to certain players for competitive purposes.

My son's team had no coach at the draft, and the other coaches drafted for this team. In other words, his team is the players the other coaches passed on in each round.
However, two players didn't show up for evaluations, and they appear to be very good, were likely drafted at a low round.

One daughter rec team has 8 players. Other daughter Travel team has 10 players(there were many cut from the team at tryouts)

I appreciate folks who volunteer to coach, team manage etc but I think PP-Coach is overdoing the expenses associated for pinnies and cones...

Also, as a rec coach in another sport, I also think it's messed up to have the mindset that if there are only 8-9 players then the extra minutes should go to the best players--I get it if there is a competitive need, but rec is developmental. Kids get better from playing.

PP-rec coach, are you one of those coaches who only let one or two certain players bring the ball up the court every time? Shame on you if so.

They don't. You end up with a ton of blowouts and a miserable experience for the kids on the noncompetitive teams. The kids on the good teams learn the mercy rules quickly; DD's team has a special defense they play once they reach the point that they can't defend past the foul line.

Why on earth would anyone sign their kid up to play in a league like this?

Probably. Everyone has a role and a position. It’s also about putting kids in a position to be successful. Why would you have a kid who dribbles the ball off his knee every time bring the ball up the floor?

Seriously! I have never heard of a basketball rec league that didn’t care about balanced teams. That’s not fun for any of the kids.

And yes, a kid who can barely dribble should get a turn once or twice a game playing point guard. It’s REC.

NP. It’s really not fair to not have drafts by 5th. Some of these girls have been in and out of AAU for various reasons by then. They need to balance teams or it’s not fun for anyone. I think we could request one person still for carpooling but it wasn’t guaranteed. 5th grade girls - 9 on the team

I don't know of any leagues in DC, Moco, or Fairfax that have drafts for rec basketball. That is just not a thing here.

Burke Basketball in Fairfax County has a draft for boys’ basketball starting in 4th grade for the winter season. I don’t know if the girls do or if the boys have it for higher grades in non-winter seasons.
