SYC is happy about doing we in local tournaments but have absolutely bottomed-out in MLS Next’s regional league.

Seeing how happy the coaches have been about “doing well” in local tournaments, I think the games against Alexandria will be it for me. I can no longer sit here and watch my son’s future get eroded into playing at some small Virginia school. I want him to have options, and it’s become clear that SYC has underperformed in this.

Our MLS Next teams are bottom of almost every age group; in the lower half of every age group. We live same distance to Alexandria Soccer as we do SYC. Our team isn’t even competitive in our games. Games look like training: get the ball to the “best” player and hope for something. We had a couple teammates go to Alexandria and they are performing well AND they are becoming better players. To me it’s very clear that SYC doesn’t belong in MLS Next. We’re a CCL club that cares about Bethesda Tournament.

Training hasn’t changed all season. And SYC leadership refuses to adapt.

My advice, don’t base it on the outcome vs Alexandria. I just gave the standings a look and I wouldn’t be surprised if SYC goes all-in for this one game. They know. A bad result is almost always a recruiting effort. Look at the overall factors: coaching quality, facilities, current standings, general direction, and most importantly style of play. Alexandria is much more of a possession-based development route, SYC (from what I’ve seen) is winning tackles for a long ball or skilled dribblers.

SYC made such a big deal and attracted all these players, then they are now playing in a more competitive league so they're getting exposed. You need good coaching to compete, this is the highest level that there is for boys in the US right now. So you need good players and good coaching.

Players this young all have an opportunity; it’s the coaching that is failing. Best players in the area go to DC United if they can; best coaches too. Next tier go to Arlington. Since you can see the results overall in the league, Alexandria has better coaching than SYC.

Oh stop it with the Arlington nonsense. That is not happening anymore. Alexandria, Achilles and SYC are getting players who used to go to Arlington or who actually played there. This shift has been underway at younger ages for three years.

What an elitist a$$ you are. I hope for your child's sake he's able to live up to your dreams and expectations of playing somewhere other then a small Virginia school! God forbid they're forced to attend Washington and Lee or the University of Richmond. Worse yet, they want to attend Hampden-Sydney. If your kid is all that, why are they not at DCU or in the National Team pool? So very pathetic.

DS is in SYC’s MLS Next and I see a worrying trend. The U13 & U14 are the only MLS Next teams, U15 and up are the “Inter League” teams. I do not really have an opinion on standings, but I do see an overall direction. The older a SYC boys team gets, the less they score and the more they get scored on. Is their a league charter or agreement, specifically a relegation or competition clause? I’m worried about 2022/2023 season with SYC being in MLS Next. We didn’t receive an invite from DC United, but we are considering Alexandria’s MLS Next or Arlington’s ECNL.

U14: 10 games played, 19 goals scored (+4 GD)
U15: 10 games played, 15 goals scored (-5 GD)
U16: 8 games played, 6 goals scored (-16 GD)

We are not at SYC, but you cannot look at U16-19 to determine what will happen to the younger teams based on the trajectory of teams that formed when SYC was not affiliated with MLS Next (all of the SYC teams above U15 are brand new MLS Next teams this year, and they had little time to try to recruit new players for new age groups.) There is not relegation for specific teams in MLS Next (or in ECNL). Area clubs in MLS Next just obtained the additional age groups, so although it is possible that MLS Next will reevaluate that decision for all clubs in a few years, it is highly doubtful any would lose age groups based on this year's performance.

Just pay attention to your kids age group. Older age groups do not represent any trend for your younger kid. People have pointed out valid reasons for older teams to struggle but you have already made up your mind so won't listen.
