Are the diploma kids and career kids in the same IB classes? |

Banneker has space available for every kid who wants to attend who meets their admissions threshold. They actually have more seats than kids enrolling in 9th grade just about every year, and the new campus has more seats than the old campus did.
I'm one who thinks that (for better or worse) more white kids will be attending soon. |
What gives you that impression? There are currently white kids at Banneker. Do you need like an engraved invitation? I’m not sure what you expect? They have a great program, wonderful teachers, great students, and a beautiful new building. Not sure what more white people need? |
DP. I wouldn't encourage my white DC to go to Banneker or to a HBCU. It's not for us. Nor would I encourage my DS to go to a women's college. |
??? Why are you contributing to this discussion then? Again there are white kids at Banneker. It’s a school for motivated, smart students. |
The comment above is unreasonable, given that the student body at Banneker has never been more than 2% white. Banneker is, and always has been, the HS equivalent of an Historically Black College. As far as I'm know, DCPS has never written that down anywhere, but anybody who knows a thing about "application" DCPS high schools is aware of the situation. Banneker doesn't actively keep whites out, but enrolling them has never been the school's mission. White parents in search of a good public HS in this city almost always respect the special space that Banneker is for advanced AA students by not seeking to enroll their children in the program. You can pretend otherwise, if a sanctimonious, knee-jerk PC way, but it's clueless, and silly. I'd like to see Banneker stop being the high school equivalent of an HSBC in this decade. This would clearly be a complex, deliberative, labor-intensive process, starting with hiring a lot more staff and faculty members who aren't AA or Latino, starting to feature white and Asian students in Banneker PR materials etc. |

| Oops! I meant "+1" sounds like an awesome school! |
If I understand right, SWW was originally primarily AA, too. Things can change. Banneker is most definitely not the HS equivalent of an HBCU. It's an excellent selective school in a majority-AA (or close to it) city. FWIW, my 9th grader says there are way more than ~3 white-appearing kids in their class. |
Check out the website. The faculty is diverse, not representing just one race. If you are worried about your child being a minority then indeed it is perhaps not for you, but others might not be as concerned about that. I have had my white children in AA majority environments,.and they found many kids with common interests. Being a minority did not impact their experience in a negative way. |
Is enrolling whites ANY DCPS school's mission? I sure hope not. |
I am sure that white students are more than welcomed at Banneker. Sadly, I think most whites are like PP and don’t want their child to be a minority at a school because it terrifies them. They think their white child will be treated poorly, like a minority child in a predominantly white school. They also have a number of white teachers. I don’t think you know very much about the school based on your comment about teachers and it being an HBCI. It’s been recent that white families even considered DCPS at all… so almost all public schools in DC could be viewed as such at one time. |
It should be. But it's not. |
Exactly! Educating students should be their mission. |
