Yes disabilities can cause issues, but the majority of the time I’ve found it’s bc the parents are undisciplined, kinda lazy (expect the child to figure it out on their own rather than put real effort into it), and are not able to push through their child’s resistance or challenges. I’m certainly not a perfect parent myself, but there is something a little disturbing about 4 year olds still pooping in a diaper

NP. My daughters were trained at 2.5 and just shy of 3 years, thanks.

Anyway, I have this thing where I realize that a lot of people in this world have special needs and medical issues, and none of that is my business unless a parent wants to share a diagnosis with me.

There’s something a little different about grown adults in 2021 not realizing that special needs and disabilities are not always visible.

+1. My boys all took initiative and were potty trained fairly early, around 2 years, but god knows I have struggled in other areas. You can’t know what another family is working with or what challenges they are facing with potty training or any other behavioral/developmental issue. My boys were all late talkers and the amount of people that suggested I read to them as though I wasn’t already doing that (and so much more!) was ridiculous. Why assume the parents are lazy and not putting in effort?

OP, you should MYOB. My kid was in pull-ups until almost 5. She has autism, but is high-functioning enough that some people don't notice. Disability would be my first assumption about a kid who isn't potty trained until later than most kids. But regardless, it's none of your business.

All the kids I know who didn't train by 4ish had physical and/or developmental issues.

No it’s not normal. Either there’s an issue or the parents are crazy. Maybe the kid is lucky and will get it by K, but if not, oh boy.

It’s not. My question is if it’s not unusual for kids to wear diapers full time at this age.

Op, you already know the answer to this. You’re just posting so you feel better.

My school has 3 pre-k classes and every year there is at least one kid who isn't potty trained. Sometimes the parents will send in pull-ups and sometimes they say that the kid is "still learning." If the kid has an accident, they call the parents so that would motivate me to get my kid trained if I had to come in to change every accident.
