Congratulations! Minnesota is the school that I'm always most surprised doesn't get more DMV love (especially considering how much Pitt gets and how similar those two schools are).

My kid visited Minnesota (Mac, St. Olaf, Carleton). All the white sameness at the schools and around the Twin Cities in general was hard for her. Everything felt very alien to her— even though she is white. She just didn’t like the vibe. Which is ash me, because for different reasons p, all 3 schools had something to offer her. Pitt was a lot closer to the mix of kids at her FCPS public.

The percentage of white students at Pitt and UMN (both of which my kid applied to) is almost identical. Can’t speak for the SLACs you mentioned.

My husband did UM. So, I can’t comment. I did the 3 SLACs with my older kid a couple years go, and the lack of diversity was striking. But, he liked St. Olaf. My current kid took a strong dislike to MN, period. The whole state. She just hated it, and felt like whole area was very white and very weird. I know demographics say it isn’t true. But good luck convincing a teen whose mind is made up. Not MN, period. Which is a shame, because Carleton in particular should be a excellent match. Nope.

Pittsburgh’s. Much more diverse city in general. More like DC.

Really not trying to beat this into the ground but a quick search shows Pittsburgh is 67% White, while Minneapolis is 64%. So …

Sooo… I believe I said that I know her perceptions don’t match up with demographic realities. I’m not insulting the state or the colleges. My other kid almost went to St. Olaf. But, these were my kids perceptions. And she dug in.

Someone asked why Pitt and not U Minn. For my kid, that’s why. I think it’s been well established by now that kids make decisions on colleges parents find baffling. If you think you can change her mind, you’re welcome to try. As I said, I really wish she would ED Carleton.
