My kid visited Minnesota (Mac, St. Olaf, Carleton).  All the white sameness at the schools and around the Twin Cities in general was hard for her. Everything felt very alien to her— even though she is white. She just didn’t like the vibe.  Which is ash me, because for different reasons p, all 3 schools had something to offer her.  Pitt was a lot closer to the mix of kids at her FCPS public. [/quote]

My husband did UM. So, I can’t comment.   I did the 3 SLACs with my older kid a couple years go, and the lack of diversity was striking.  But, he liked St. Olaf.  My current kid took a strong dislike to MN, period. The whole state.  She just hated it, and felt like whole area was very white and very weird. I know demographics say it isn’t true. But good luck convincing a teen whose mind is made up.  Not MN, period.  Which is a shame, because Carleton in particular should be a excellent match.  Nope.
