They're such good grifters. They know they can convince people to believe anything they want.

How much money did they make just off of LuLaRoe? Billions? How much money have they paid out in law suits and legal fees? Probably only millions. Will they ever be convicted of anything? Nope. They have nothing to lose and putting a camera in front of their faces always works in their favor.

The got $$$$ and a lot of families lost a lot of $$$.

They're like a lot of white, white collar criminals. The laws don't apply to them.

Do people hate on LLR because of what kind of company it is, or because of the patterned leggings? I've never bought Lularoe because I refuse to support MLM. However, I do buy high-quality patterned leggings from reputable companies. I love them and they make me more excited to exercise. I would be devastated if the public plurality deemed patterned leggings *over*.

Why on earth would that woman who had millions and millions of dollars, go to Mexico to have gastric by pass surgery?

I thought this was fascinating as well. It doesn’t make them look good, but I guess the alternative was having no voice at all.

Because it’s a predatory mlm. Enjoy your patterned leggings!

Deanne (and others in the family) got a kickback/commission from the clinic in Mexico every time they referred someone there. Gotta keep the money flowing in by whatever means necessary!

I'm watching this episode now and it's insane.

I hate mlms. They are so predatory and they often target people without much extra money who aren’t educated in the subject and who are desperate for income but have few real options. It’s so sick. I haven’t yet watched this doc but I’m looking forward to it.

+1. This mlm positions itself as being somehow different from the rest but it’s not. Oddly, I’ve seen otherwise educated and competent women fall for this one and even my stepmother, who could afford the best, buys some kind of serum from them.

I kinda remember people selling things on Facebook, but not really. Not as much as people obsessed with Rodin + Fields and Beautycounter. Anyway, being from Utah I'm super wary of MLMs and find them both fascinating and so sad.

Based just on episode one, the founders seem like they started with good intentions. Seems like some logical regulation could solve the MLM problem. Like why are "downlines" legal? Shouldn't it be more like a franchise where say they could have X number of consultants per zone? I just don't see how a company where the profit model is a pyramid scheme should be legal. What's the argument FOR the MLM structure?

I get the "network marketing" and "direct sales" argument, even though I personally don't want to buy products from a friend unless they made them, but why the element of getting paid to recruit other consultants?

Because a casual buyer might buy $100 worth of stuff. But if people are "consultants" they are urged to keep "inventory" meaning they buy 5-10k worth of stuff. So the company doesn't need to broadly sell their stuff or sell it at actual businesses at wholesale. They inflate the prices to their consultants who then jack it up further.

Right. I understand. I just don’t understand why that’s legal.

My DH has a college acquaintance who got into this years ago (different mlm but same idea) and reaches out to him periodically. Fresh out of college my DH expressed some interest because he trusted this guy and didn’t know anything about mlms. I had to educate him real fast on what they are and how exploitative they are. Obviously, now that he understands he just forwards the guys calls.

Oh and the guy who has been working with an mlm for almost a decade now? He’s driving a leased bmw and lives with his parents.

Possibly because in the US most places require you be very overweight, you have to lose a certain amount before surgery etc. I imagine the process is simpler in Mexico

+1 they’ll do WLS on people who are just regular overweight/obese vs. in the US you have to be morbidly obese to get WLS from a reputable clinic. And also the $$ kickbacks.
