| I wonder how many 6th graders are taking Algebra I class at Rachel Carson MS this school year and if Carson MS opens Algebra II in 8th grade. |
No one knows it?
|
Why do you care? |
|
More than a few 6th graders - around 15 give or take - from Floris, McNair and Hunters Woods - are in Algebra 1.
In years past, even a few 5th graders. Yes, Carson has Algebra 2 in 8th, enough enrollment for multiple classes, because some take Geometry during the summer between 7-8th grade. |
What do they take after multivariable calculus and matrix algebra? Don't say AP Stats, because many take that sophomore or junior year as an elective. |
| so, is there is any real need/use of completing algebra 1 by 6th grade? |
For some very advanced kids, yes. |
| There are at least seven taking it at Kilmer. |
| if they are very advanced, how are they measured for acceleration of two grades ahead. |
The IAAT score of 91 or higher and pass advanced on the 7th grade Math SOL. |
Algebra I Honors in 6th grade is 3 years ahead. |
|
Based on my kids, I wouldn't say Algebra 1 in 6th grade is "very advanced". More advanced yes, but they are definitely not math geniuses.
All the 6th graders appear to be adjusting well as far as grades go. Not unusual for 8th graders at Carson to take Algebra 2 at 8th grade. Unusual would be the ones who take precalc while in 8th grade - they have to go to HS for classes High school sequence would be: Precalc Calc BC (Stats AP as elective) Multivariable Calc Linear Algebra |
Nobody says it's math genius. But taking a 9th grade course at 6th grade is certainly "very advanced". |
Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra are semester courses and would be taken junior year in the sequence. So what do they take senior year? |
