how many 6th graders are taking Algebra I at Rachel Carson MS?

The bar is the same for 7th grade. 91 percentile or above on the Iowa readiness test and a pas advanced on the 7th grade SOL.

PP, how does a 5th grader write 7th grade SOL / IOWA etc., ? I was curious to find how early is the student put on this track ? Like he has to take classes with the 5th graders when he is in 4th grade and write the 6th grade sol when he is in 4th grade. what sets the ball to start rolling ?

The ball is rolling in 3rd or 4th grade. My son was with a rather large group of children in 4th grade who were put two years ahead. In 5th grade, he took 7th grade math and was tested at that time (IOWA and 7th grade SOL). Now, he is taking algebra.

Did the school begin this process on their own, or did you have to request that your child would be included in this group? When and how did you find out that the school was doing this?

They did not ask my permission to put him two years ahead. They just took the top kids and ran with it.

PP here - and I didn't find out about it until midway thru fourth grade. Fwiw- he is an exceptional math student who has no issue with the advanced work. He is personally further ahead than his class is.

Again, TOTALLY school dependent. If your principal doesn't believe in/see a need for/get math acceleration you are SOL (and not the VA state testing kind.)

Thanks for that bit of information. I 'm the person that asked about what process starts it. Were you made aware of what testing or measures that allowed the school to make this decision ?

you should not ask any serious questions here -- ask your school!! they should know everything!! but they may not tell you the whole story though.

Why can't this be listed in the defined math sequence. Some parents are aware of it. Some parents are not aware of it. This is completely unfair that some students have the opportunity and some don't. If such an opportunity is given, it should be accessible to all the schools and not Principal dependent.

If there are only 10 6th graders who are taking Algebra I Honor, when they are in 8th grade, will Carson open the Algebra II Honor class for these 10 kids?
Or need more kids in order to have school open Algebra II class? isn't it a concern?

In years past, even a few 5th graders.

Yes, Carson has Algebra 2 in 8th, enough enrollment for multiple classes, because some take Geometry during the summer between 7-8th grade.

There are 10 6th graders taking Algebra 1 Honors at Carson from McNair and Hunters Woods. They are in a class where the rest of the students are 8th graders. And no I am not pushing my child to do anything DC doesn't want to do or was my idea.

Where do these kids take Geometry for credit during the summer?

Usually they take them on-line.

Like above our process started in 3rd grade. Kids were identified by teachers, not me. Through 3rd,4th and 5th the big group got smaller, and certain kids were recommended in 5th to take iowa and then math 7 sol. TO be able to do that in 5th when you haven't even taken math 7 is not an easy hurdle.
