Familiar with West Chester, PA ? Possibly relocating

Anonymous
We are considering moving away from DC Metro area and looking at parts of Pennsylvania. So far I've found fairly good jobs in West Chester and Harrisburg. We'd like to move to southeastern Pennsylvania.

Anyone from that area? Can you recommend any towns with great school district, newer homes with half acre or more land?

Thanks!

Born and raised there!. How can I help??

Sorry, got too excited, and pressed enter too soon. Do you know where in wc? The best, IMHO school district around there is conestoga, just to the east of wc. WCASD has also gotten quite good over the years, but I'd say conestoga is more of an equivalent to southern mcps. I went to east high school in WC fwiw. The neighborhood off five points road... On old nussex farms is lovely, quite new. A lot of homes in and near wc have at least a third acre, so what you are asking is not unusual. Where would you be working? That'll help pinpoint a better location for you... I have so much I want to share!!

You rock!

What is it like there? Family oriented? College town? Traffic/Commute?

We have a young preschooler, so neighborhoods with terrific public elementary school and on. Or if Catholic school you recommend?

Wc is very very catholic, so you will have your pick of catholic schools. St Agnes is very popular. Villa Maria for older girls and Malvern for older boys. The coed catholic high school who's name I can't remember isn't as great. But, still quite popular. In the borough of wc, it is definitely college town feel, but outside of the borough, less so. In my neighborhood in wc, all of the neighbors were very very close, and still are. Like half of the neighborhood came to DC for my wedding! Traffic and commute really depends on where you are living and working. The borough is very much 9-5 and congested, but so small that it doesn't matter!. West goshen and east goshen are more typical suburban, almost Rockville-esque. There are tons of towns/townships withing WCASD. I'd first decide (depending on where you are working), if you are going to live within WCASD, or east to Conestoga. Conestoga district has much more of a upperclass, urban, Bethesda Chevy chase feel than WC. It's closer to Philly.

Ps-- wc elementary schools I like best are East Goshen, Hillsdale, and glen acres. I went to east goshen and fern hill, fwiw. They are all very similar though-- too small an area for vast differences!

Sorry to keep bombarding you-- the less great catholic school I was think of is bishop shanahan. Phew! That was driving me nuts!

Another born and raised in WC and East High School grad! Agree with what has been said so far. WC is a great place to live. I grew up off Boot Road next to a dairy farm that eventually became a corporate park that housed the original QVC, which has since moved about a half mile away. If your job is in WC, I'd move to WC. I think the school district is fine. There are a lot of great school districts up there, though, which along with great housing is making me consider a move back there as well. Tredyffrinn-Easttown is one of the best school districts; it is slightly to the east of West Chester. I'd add Great Valley and Lower Merion school district, which are both excellent as well. I believe the ones around Kennett Square are also very good, but that is on the other side of West Chester, so I'm not as familiar with that area.

The borough is so much different than when I lived there. I'd compare it to Old Town Alexandria, where I live now. Lots of restaurants, brick sidewalks, quaint in a way, despite the college being there.

Bring on the questions!

Prolific poster here-- hehe, me and pp grew up nearly walking distance from each other. I agree with e dry thing pp said! Lower merion is also really good, like conestoga. I love the schools by kennet square, but I can't remember what they are called! I took all of my sat 2s there! But like pp said, if you are really working in WC, and moving there specifically for it, I'd stay in WC, no need to have a big commute just to go to other schools!

You guys are the best!!

We are in the early stages of doing our homework on the area. My husband is in cyber forensics, I am a SAHM. So he's looking for a job in that area.

He's not a city guy, so Philly proper is out (for work and home). There are a few jobs with QVC. Any knowledge on how it is to work there? Any place to stay away from?

It's our first relocation, so any information is very appreciated!

I already startrd a spreadsheet on the info you guys already shared!

Prolific poster again--- there's are plenty of SAHMs in WC-- you will fit in much better than here. I'm a SAHM here by DC, and often wish the SAHM community was more like west Chester's! Looottssss of the women in my neighborhood worked for qvc over the years. (And one dad had an actual "real" job there.). Everyone always said good things about it. Used to have mothers' hours jobs and stuff like that. I don't know anything about cyber forensics, but there's a big SAP building east of WC, in newtown square, and an IBM building on Paoli pike. (Across from my fav hoagie place!) if he's not a city guy, stay away from conestoga then, you'll prefer wc, or that kennett square district who's name we can't remember.

New poster and another person who grew up in WC. Hillsdale, Stetson, and Henderson for me! I'm super envious, OP!
