We believe we need a glider for our new baby that is due this Spring. But almost all of the gliders we have seen will not fit into our renovated Petworth town house urban styling.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be a stylish alternative? The ones with bare wood and cheap pads are the worst offenders! |
We got one at Thomasville that is very stylish. Don't shop at a baby store. Go to regular furniture stores. That being said, we didn't really need a rocker/glider. Our kid would not let you sit down under any circumstances to rock him. He was a sway on your feet in front of the crib kid. You could wait and see what kind of kid you get. |
West Elm has a modern glider; it's reallllly comfortable.
Or you can just pick a chair you like and buy the glider mechanism yourself and attach it to the bottom (only works if it's an upholstered chair with a skirt, obviously, which may not work for you). The mechanism is only like $35. Another option is an Eames rocker -- I have a knockoff one that's actually pretty comfy. |
I'm not sure who the marketing genius was that convinced all parents that they "need" a glider. Basically you can rock your kid without a chair or just in a regular rocking chair.
But if you're looking for something small: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50039552/ |
Lazy boy. Ugly but so comfortable. |
Dutaliere glider/recliner. You won't regret it. |
who cares, it's a baby's room and a town house. You aren't going to wow people and give them paid tours. |
Have you SEEN the styling on baby gear? The glider is going to be the least of your worries. (No really, once you have the baby, you'll care a lot less about "urban styling" and more about the particular usefulness of equipment in helping get baby to eat, sleep, and be poop-free.) |
I have one of these and I hate it. It's a top of the line $900 retail glider/recliner/with ottoman thingy and it is so incredibly ugly and uncomfortable (I didn't pay for it, my friend gave me hers that was only a year old). I really regret not just getting a la-z-boy or something. OP - if I had to do it all over again, I'd either check out la-z-boy or get an upholstered glider from Crate and Barrel, Room & Board, West Elm, Land of Nod, Pottery Barn Kids, or something like that. |
Mine was like this too, finally at 18 months she likes to sit down on the rocker before bedtime and read books. |
Ballard designs- many nice fabrics to choose from.

Best Chairs has a couple with cleaner lines. Get a recliner BTW, not a glider.

Yes. Get one that swivels, too. And they aren't so expensive that you will feel bad ditching it or giving it away for your kid to take to college. Note: It's not just about rocking the baby, it's about having a good place to sit and snuggle for stories, and for you to sleep in when the baby is sick and wants to be held upright all night long, and for your kid to curl up in and read as s/he gets older. Focus your aesthetic concerns on paint colors and bed linens. The chair needs to be functional. I was all set to get rid of my son's Dutailier when he was 10 or so. He wouldn't let me, because he likes sitting there to read. |
You might not need one. I did all my nursing on the couch or in bed. |
Sorry to hear that. I'm obsessed with mine. I have a best recliner in ds's room but got dutaliere glide/recline for DDs room and as far as I'm concerned, it was completely with the doubled price tag. |
