Gang infested High Schools in MoCo?

Anonymous
I am wondering which High Schools to avoid as we look for a new home. We likely are not going to move to Whitman, Churchill, Wooten, BCC or even Walter Johnson (the "good" schools). That leaves the "lower teir". Which ones should we steer clear of for sure?

Are you fearful that your precious snowflake will be recruited?

No, but i'd rather they not be stabbed while in school or around that "element" if I can avoid it. Is your kid a gang member?

....is it possible to just downsize so that you can afford a home or townhouse or condo in the pyramid you prefer to be in? I bet you can find something you like that you can afford in one of those clusters.

No, my kid isn't a gang banger...and your kid won't be either unless they came to this country alone without parents or are being raised by low-income grandparents or extended family. Gang activity and violence is limited to those kids who swim in those ponds. The other students aren't involved. But if you want a gang-free zone, then you know the drill: pick a school that is predominantly white with a low FARMs rate.

So aside from your list of "good" tier one schools (whatever that means), I think you are left with Sherwood and possibly Magruder and Damascus.

Look in:

Blake
Sherwood
Magruder
Damascus
Poolesville
Richard Montgomery
Quince Orchard
Seneca Valley

There is not much inventory-and I also worry about the more affluent schools being too elitist or snooty (particularly Whitman and Churchill), Wooten being a competitive "pressure cooker". Would consider BCC and WJ but again wery few options, not really wanting to cram a family of 6 into a 1,200 sq ft condo, townhome or buy a shack that is in such bad shape/supposed to be a teardown....hate this area.

I thought Seneca Valley was terrible? Is that the school up in Germantown?

BCC: look for a place on a busy road. Affordable and safe.

Till your kid is mowed down by a car while playing out front.

Bcc had a couple gang incidents that required significant police response recently (was in the mcps thread I think). I believe it's the largest (crazy huge) HS in the county. Check out the demographics.
