New Additions to Leagues Check Up (ECNL & GA)

No doubt the top GA teams have fared well too but not as deeply into the league. That may well change this year and going forward but we won’t know until it happens and right now there’s some dilution — between ECNL and GA, c 250 teams nationwide at the “top” level.

Did you know that GA college commitments have gone up every year since GA was formed?

The GA has added clubs every year so the commitments should go up.

ECNL parent logic says that adding more clubs to a league waters it down. Kind of the opposite of garnering more commitments.

Both can be true. Adding more teams can water the league down. Adding a single college commitment across the entire country increases the number of commitments within the league though.

I am sure there would be more GA commitments to colleges if the college coaches thought it was worth recruiting from. but based on the coaching turnout watching GA teams at the showcases, the numbers explain themselves

And yet ecnl has either roughly the same number of teams in each age group OR slightly MORE than ga, even with its recent growth

The leagues are virtually the same in terms of structure, costs, coaching, showcase events. The only difference is that right now more good players seek out ECNL teams, and that’s why there are more commitments from ECNL. But there is no magic pixie dust that makes players better because the initials of the league. The coaching is not any better. Which means ECNL has no long term hold on players. GA has managed to grab some market share and there is no reason they can’t continue to eat into ECNL’s share. All it takes is a good enough incentive (money, partnerships, leverage from MLS) and the good players may shift leagues and change the balance quickly. Two healthy leagues competing with each other would be a good thing.

Agree this guy has his ECNL hat on too tight. Guaranteed that his kid plays for lower level club.

He seems pretty optimistic about GA’s potential prospects for an “ECNL hat.”

Not sure about "players will search out ECNL" comment. My kid plays at a top GA club. To get ready for playoffs and ideally finals they've been playing (and beating) ECNL clubs. Every time this happens more ECNL players jump in on sessions during the week. Ive also noticed several ECNL parents that I haven't spoken with since our kids were young suddenly reaching out. From what I can see theres a group of parents that just chase whichever team is winning. I dont think GA or ECNL really matters if the team and club overall are known for winning.

Let's see what happens to both leagues with roster limits.

lol...believable. ECNL be aware... better shutdown the ECNL since your parents are talking to GA parents about how "awesome" gA is and allegedly winning local scrimmages...
