No, they offered DL for all who applied to VA. Parents screamed they didn't want virtual or hybrid so you got what you asked for. You told parents it had to be in person or deal with it. So, those of us who were uncomfortable with our kids being around yours due to behavior choose VA. Now its time for you to deal with it when your kids get quarantined. Oh well.. It is viable long-term. Many kids are doing virtual long term. It may not be viable for your family as you need free child care but that's a different issue.

How many?

Exactly. And how many are regretting it?

There are about 3200 students in virtual. More applications pending.

We don't regret it.

You don't regret it because you like being a martyr even though it is obvious at this point that school reopening hasnt driven infections in the community and that kids are fine.

No just don't like being around the covid crazies who can't keep their masks on or are in all out denial

Girl, if you think MoCo is full of covid-crazies, you need a reality check. Did you mean crazy-cautious? This is the land of masks on playgrounds.

That's exactly what she means by Covid-crazies.

The covid-forever crowd that things the disease is lurking behind every bush ready to pounce on their child.

Those are the covid-crazies

I am currently at a local park waiting for my son to finish soccer practice. There is a little obscure playground here that no one ever visits. There is a family of 4 at the playground in masks. There is no one around them. Just them and their toddlers. What are they scared of?

Why do you care? For all you know, one of them is recovering from cancer. Butt out!

This- we know a family that wear masks around eachother at home too because dad has to go into the office part-time and one kid is back in school. Just easier to wear masks then worry about transmission at home. The family at the playground could have a similar family policy.

Precisely, my wife is an respiratory therapist and our kid is high risk. What's it to you?

I still don't get why a family playing by themselves would wear masks, especially when they are accepting much bigger risks with a respiratory therapist in the family, but YMMV. Even when masks outside were all the rage, I would only put them on myself and my kids when other people showed up at the playground.

Right. I mean, the only way that makes sense is if they also mask at home too? And eat separately?

Otherwise, it's just silly. or signaling to neighbors how much they "follow the science"

There are parents who are picking their kids up from school on rainy days during lunch so that the kids don’t have to eat inside. Everyone has gone just a little bit more insane. We were getting a little better until MoCo brought back the indoor mask mandate.

We have friends doing that and good for them. We'd do that too if ours were in person. Saying you follow science means nothing as its just a made up term to justify your behavior.

As in, saying you follow science to justify your behavior of keeping your kids out of in-person.

I'm using science to know if I have to get my kids at lunch, there is no social distancing or other basic precautions beyond masking per the CDC its best not to have kids in person. If you read the CDC guidlelines MCPS isn't really following them nor are most parents.

Well MCPS administered 29,000 tests in 141 schools and only found 18 positives. So I guess MCPS, the parents and the students are doing something right to have a positivity rate of 0.067%. But you do you. CDC guidance is predicated on community transmission and vaccination. We are 89.3% fully vaccinated and 99.2% with at least 1 dose. This is not Alabama.

This was an opt in test where those high risk opt out. Cdc guidance says more especially with large schools.

CDC guidance says that if you can’t social distance use a layered approach, vaccination, masking, cohorting, testing, ventilation and respiratory protocols. What specifically is MCPS not doing ?

vaccination: getting there, but eligible students do remain unvaccinated

masking: check

cohorting: not happening

testing: still a joke. Only 125 tests deployed to schools and roll out has been abysmal for screening tests.

ventilation: show me the data. the diamonds don't cut it.

Acknowledge it's an airborne transmitted disease.

There is no social distancing either. Everything is fully back to normal.

And we aren't. Hooray!

In Montgomery County, for the delta variant, as of yesterday, the peak seven-day new cases per 100,000 residents was on September 2 (108 new cases per 100,000 residents); the peak test positivity rate was on August 30 (3.6%); the peak percent of hospital inpatient beds occupied was on September 16 (73.8%); the peak percent of ICU beds in use was on September 17 (75.7%); and the peak percent of hospital beds occupied by patients with covid was on September 13 and 18 (9.1%).

The respective numbers yesterday were 66 new cases per 100,000 residents; 1.8% test positivity; 68.6% of hospital inpatient beds occupied; 72.8% of ICU beds in use; 7.2% of hospital beds occupied by patients with covid.

Also, 76.3% of all county residents, 89.9% of county residents aged 12+, 90.3% of county residents aged 18+, and 96.4% of county residents aged 65+ are fully vaccinated.

Zero kids in elementary school are vaccinated. Not all in middles school are. Accinated. You can still get Covid vaccinated.

yOu can also get the norovirus, RSV, pneumonia, parainfluenza, encephalitis, and all kinds of venereal diseases.

As of October 8 MCPS completed 28,000 tests on 141 schools. Where did you get the 125? Vaccination is at 89.3 % fully vaccinated. 0 pediatric deaths, and less than 10 pediatric hospitalizations in the county. Leave your anxiety in the basement or it will consume you

Surveillance testing is no longer needed. Our rate of transmission at school is 0.067%. This is a waste of money, tests and resources. Test to stay is what we need. But of course COVID grand posturing and the need to appease PAGES and MCCPTA.

That's odd, because I could have sworn my kid got on the school bus with a face mask this morning.

Correct. And even with all of those things, it looks like the delta peak is behind us, and the public-health disaster did not happen. Hooray for vaccines and Montgomery County covid policies!

Anonymous wrote:Those still complaining about the participation in opt-in testing- you really still don't get it do you? Until MCPS can enact a common sense quarantine policy, i.e., not sending entire classes home for one positive, then people like me who would otherwise participate are not. My kids aren't engaging in any other indoor activities outside of school anyway so I'm not worried about bringing it in from elsewhere.

Right. This.

I would opt my kid in if the quarantine policy was less strict.

But the idea that my kid would be sent home for 2 weeks simply because they are in the same classroom with another kid that tested positive despite having no symptoms.

Yeah, I'm not endorsing that program.

also ridiculous that they combined the consent form with testing if child is symptomatic. split up the consent. no way we're opting in for random testing under current quarantine guidelines. we would gladly opt in for testing if there are symptoms. I understand you can consent over the phone as well but still MCPS is shady trying to combine the two

Why not consent for both? You ware really selfish.

do your test your asymptomatic self randomly and/or weekly ? didn't think so

DP. I've been having my asymptomatic kid tested weekly, before we go visit the grandparents.

right - completely different situation than a masked school setting. unnecessary imo, especially if they've had their booster, but in that case to each their own with such a high risk group

DP. How is it selfish? Asymptomatic surveillance testing is a total waste of resources, just look at the recent numbers. They should have focused on test-to-stay like other districts are doing.

Other kids and families may be high risk in the school. Weekly testing is appropriate. Cdc recommends regular testing but science to you only matters when it’s imo and your opinion is for your needs only. .

Asymptomatic can spread Covid. You don’t wait for symptoms and then test and say oh well to the safety of others. Very selfish. They should have mandatory weekly testing or you cannot be in person school and parents need to figure it out.

Vaccines reduce symptoms not stop Covid. Half of mcps is not vaccinated. You can still get Covid vaccinated.
