So who here went to the ballet coronavirus party?

They wouldn’t be welcome in any truly society events in DC or elsewhere, unless they’re completely pay to play. I’ve never seen any of these people at the NGA holiday party (which is full of young “society” families) or a State dinner, not that those are the be-all of society but certainly more so than a Washington Ballet event they paid for themselves (so disgusting during covid!).

There is not "society" in DC. There isn't even that much money.

Right - hence why I put “society” in quotes. There was somewhat more of one 50 years ago, but it was people who didn’t care about being “society”.

none of them are lobbyists or in politics which rules DC. the events worth going to are never covered in the magazines that they seem to covet.

Is Spring Valley considered an exclusive neighborhood? I have only been there a few times but didn’t think it was all that, certainly not as nice as some of the other NW neighborhoods.

it was before tech millionaires existed

I have never heard of her. The article author seems to fawn over this woman by saying the rich woman made a splash when she moved to DC. She just has a lot of money that it sounds like she did not earn herself. Okay. I have no idea who she is and am not interested.

actually the start date on that is the when the 1980s gave birth to a new breed of Wall Street financier needing access to the gov't. Before that SV was home to law firm partners, business-owners, diplomats, gov't officials, and those people were the wealthiest people in Washington DC up until groups like Carlyle started showing up.

And why is this still a thread for the Health forum?

It belongs in the health forum because it is the seeding event for a potential new DC cluster. We still need to know what happened, and we still need to see fines doled out.
It also belongs in the health forum because it helps educate people who think that the only folks who might carry COVID at a party are the wait staff, but the rich folks "are clean."

Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman was reknown for her parties in Georgetown and Dem fundraising.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamela_Harriman

https://www.amazon.com/Life-Party-Biography-Churchill-Harriman/dp/0316633763

She was married first to Winston Churchill's son, followed by Leland Hayward, followed by Averell Harriman. Her big money came from her marriage to Averell Harriman of the railroad fortune. Her Georgetown parties in the 70's, 80's and 90's were legendary.

Bill Clinton named her Ambassador to France.

Her bio is very very interesting. I think no one has really replaced her as a socialite in the DC area since she passed. The instagramers and etsy sellers of today come across as socialite wannabes compared to Pamela who was a real power broker.

I don't understand why DC is their home base. With all that money and no jobs, why stay in DC?!?

I think it’s the “small pond big fish” phenomenon. There are just enough people who “care”
About being in the “know” while actually being clueless about real society. People who are actually classy don’t care. My grandmother was married to a Supreme Court justice, regularly entertained multiple presidents and First Ladies, took Spanish lessons with one First Lady, cooking lessons with another and threw fabulous parties - but would invite regular people who clerked for her husband, musicians and artists of all backgrounds and races as well as ambassadors, justices and cabinet officials.

She was such a lovey woman. One of my grandmother’s close friends. My grandmother spoke at her memorial.

You remind me of a girl I went to school with who interjected “my grandfather was involved in that” to like every single historical event. We were like omg we get it.
