That description goes beyond the descriptions I’ve seen in more credible sources, and the video I unwittingly ended up seeing on Twitter. I haven’t seen the part about him being asleep anywhere but here.

I’ve seen he was sleeping elsewhere, he certainly seemed to be sleeping (at first, obviously not sleeping after cawthorn *mounted his face and began his spastic humping.**

I guess it’s possible he was awake but lazing in bed under the covers though! However it’s crystal clear he was not expecting the surprise face to groin frenzy that occurred. Honestly it’s pretty weird that you watched that video and were like “normal sexual encounter!” Unless they had prearranged a surprise sustained naked face humping it’s clear that the issue of the tape is not at all the fact that it’s two men (/cousins!)

We're not shaming him for being gay or bi. We are shaming him for his hypocrisy. For doing real damage to LGBTQ+ people while being one of them.

DP. What exactly is the hypocrisy here? As a preface, I loath Madison Cawthorn, so this is not meant as a defense of him personally beyond this limited issue. But personally, I believe sexuality is innate and not a choice, which means Cawthorn did not choose whether or not to be gay. He simply is. Hypocrisy is about conflicting actions - doing one thing for yourself but holding other people to a different standard. Even if Madison Cawthorn has taken anti-gay stances, this would not be hypocrisy based solely on his status as gay. Had Madison Cawthorn ever advocated for criminalizing gay sex? Not that I’m aware of. In fact, in the past he has expressed support for gay marriage rights. So where is the hypocrisy in that?

This isn’t about exposing hypocrisy, it’s about playing on people’s bigotry against LGBTQIA people to try to defeat an election campaign. I would not shed a tear about Cawthorn losing the primary, but if you support gay rights, you should not be celebrating this particular smear tactic at all. When, how and whether someone comes out is their own intensely personal, private business, and no one else should be outing a person against their will without extremely compelling reason (which this isn’t).

What is the “smear tactic?” Discussing images posted publicly on social media by Cawthorne and his staffer/FWB/third cousin? They put this stuff out there. This wasn’t surreptitiously filmed by a political opponent. They created and posted this content. Cawthorne himself recently gossiped in a public forum about the sex lives of fellow members of Congress. Is giving an attention seeker attention considered a smear tactic? Are truthful statements about documented actions a smear tactic? Is expressing that you think someone is gay a smear tactic if you don’t think there’s anything wrong with being gay?
