If you read the newspaper articles, it is obviously Evans' resolution. I don't think she thought this through carefully. Justice HS sounds like a program for kids in juvenile detention. It must be a last-ditch effort to placate the NAACP after it became clear she couldn't get enough votes for Marshall or Johns. It's also hard to come up with any names for the teams besides "Warriors," which is already the Wakefield High mascot, or "Fighters," which works as a metaphor but probably not as the mascot name for a school that has a large number of suspensions. |
If only they would learn from history and name it after something neutral that can come to have meaning as the community defines itself over time.
#PeaceValley Or simply Valley HS. |
^ Says the person who is happy leaving all the many other schools named after white men in place. |
DP poster here. Is that what this is about? Sad. Here's the name then: Social Justice High That explains the whole process. Do you really think it is that important to name a high school after someone? What was the last high school in FCPS named for an individual? |
It's odd that you'd ridicule the idea of social justice. But, again, if you don't like naming schools after people, let's rename all those so honored. |
I'm glad it won't be renamed after Barbara Rose Johns. "BJ High School" would have been a total disaster, and she had an incredibly thin resume in any event. |
She had a middle name, if you're going to reduce the name to initials. Isn't that how they use WTW? |
Do you know any teenagers? Doesn't sound like it. Here's a clue: it would not be reduced to initials unless there is a negative connotation. (And, I've never heard anyone use WTW except in writing.) But, if you don't think BJ could be used as a chant at a sporting event, then you don't know teenagers. |
DP. I voted for Justice Thurgood Marshall, but would be perfectly happy with Peace Valley HS. For me, it's not about getting a specific name, it's about no longer honoring Stuart. Peace Valley HS accomplishes that. I consider the change a win regardless of whether my specific choice is selected. Signed a member of the Stuart community who also happens to be a minority. |
$850,000. - cost to change the name? Just heard this on Channel 8 Morning News. Is this possible?? |
Probably just a start. That is mostly for the signs and the activities/athletic gear. They didn't include all the administrative time that it will take to change things--all the little things like rubber stamps for the library, etc. All the physical work that will be required to fix everything. Who alerts the SAT people? The colleges? Think about it. |
It's starting to lean toward Mendez High.
Do you think that will affect housing values at all? SHOCKING!... that Tamera D-K thinks the school should still be called Stuart. Do you think she's going to be advocating for changing Robert E. Lee High School to something else? |
Peace Valley High is a better choice. |
I can't tell if you're trolling or you're really so profoundly racist that you think other people must be racist too... |
Mendez HS failed on a tie vote... I think. |
