They are not moving high FARMs ES into a HS that is already high FARMs. That would be awful for all of the kids. They could put the aviation academy there because there is room and there are students in the area that would benefit from the program. Or a strong auto mechanics academy, outside the traditional auto mechanics class that is at a bunch of schools. Some type of vo-tech program would be a great fit at Herndon. They can shift McNair and Coates to KAA easily enough, which will make space at Westfield and then shift kids from Chantilly to Westfield. Floris is likely to end up at KAA, which relieves South Lakes and Westfield. They can shift Oak Hill to KAA, which will help Chantilly. Then shift some kids from Centerville to Chantilly, which should now have space for kids. |
No dog in this fight but high FARMS kids generally prefer closer high FARMS schools over lower FARMS schools that are further away.
In Herndon’s case if it has space adding more high FARMS neighborhoods wouldn’t push anyone out of the school and the number of high achieving kids would stay about the same. |
That is reasonable. Hopefully, they could also put Crossfield there in order to relieve the bus to Oakton. But, if there is really a need for more kids at Herndon as some insist, there are kids in 20170 (same as Town of Herndon) that live less than 2.5 miles from Herndon High-some, even less, and more than 13 miles to Langley, But, I think Herndon is okay like it is. Over 2000 is not a small school. |
DP. “Grumble, grumble, great falls, Langley! Great falls, grumble grumble.” |
No one said a word about Great Falls. Why do you keep bringing that up? |
20170 is Herndon. Everything south of 7 should without question be going to Herndon. |
+1 |
Grumble, grumble. |
Floris is a split feeder. They might leave part at South Lakes--depending on Meren input. As for Centreville and Westfield, they could shift Centreville kids to Westfield rather than Chantilly to Westfield and Centreville to Chantilly. That would avoid a double switch. I am not familiar enough with the neighborhoods to know what would work better. It would seem one school to Westfield would help Centreville and Westfield. |
DP. We must have different ideas about what is OK, because it’s offensive to me that we’d build Herndon out to 2750 seats and then say it’s OK as long as it just has over 2000 kids. Meanwhile other schools that do need more seats get nothing from FCPS. If nothing else, it’s an indictment of just how incompetent FCPS’s facilities planning has been for over a decade. |
So it's grumbling when people mention Herndon homes that should be going to Herndon, but when you propose that some Westfield kids backfill Herndon instead that's fine? Or literally anyone else saying Chantilly kids to Centreville or whatever. Those are all fine, but the mere mention of filling Herndon with Herndon kids from the north side of Herndon is grumbling and verboten. Got it. |
True. They should never have let KAA property go in the first place. However, I do think there was political pressure from the Board of Supervisors who were likely getting pressure from the feds to relieve an embarrassing situation. Nevertheless, if you think they should fill Herndon, there are neighborhoods in the very close vicinity that could go there and save on bus transportation. It seems that FairFacts and Great Falls Citizens are the ones complaining about it the most. Let them fill Herndon if they think it is so important. They sure seem anxious for some reason to send other kids there. |

Wow. So Robyn Lady, who represents Dranesville, would be just fine with creating a new magnet school that kids in her district from Langley, McLean, and Marshall couldn't attend because they live too far east? Is she on the spectrum or just really stupid? It's rare to find an elected official who so regularly demonstrates she doesn't care about most of her own constituents. |
Doesn't take rocket science. Her constituents do not want this school to relieve the overcrowded schools in the area.. Her influential constituents have other plans. They have made that clear on this thread. |
I suspect Facilities has been working KAA as community HS since March. All of this noise is just seagulling. |
