This isn't packaged ready to eat food. It's bags of grains, peanut meal etc. it get distributed via organizations to place that prepare it and to villages etc.

plenty of rural Americans know what to do with those bags unlike someone from N Arlington

Do you really even believe your own BS?

Seriously. My family is from a rural area of the midwest, and if you gave them some noodles, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, and ranch dressing, they could make just about anything tasty, but peanut meal. Umm, no.

We already distribute $100 billion in food subsidies to hungry Americans, a large share of it actually goes to rural red counties.

Thank Big Ag for why something less-practical like bags of peanut meal might be getting pushed as something to distribute to the hungry. Note that Big Ag gives Republicans a lot of money to help with this madness.

Anyway; they got fired - it totally sucks.

But, really; if I have known these people for years but never even heard of the federal agency they were contractors for why is everyone freaking out?

Foreign aid will always be a part of US national security- and I am sure it will resume…but in the scheme of things this is not really an issue.

Potentially firing thousands of FBI agents seems a lot more serious.

Your good friends just got fired, but because they never told you the acronym of their funding source your response is “meh, guess it didn’t matter anyway.”

I am one of those people losing their jobs due to the foreign aid freeze. My work saved babies. Now it is gone and babies will die. Is that enough for you to feel more than “meh” for them? How about for me?

Friend my a$$.

DP. It is always terrible when friends are laid off. But this is not a thing that only affects federal workers! On the contrary, many of my private sector friends have been laid off multiple times in recent years. It is stressful and awful.

Exactly.

Brilliant! Give every American a bag of wheat and some corn meal. Then we can go to our local mill and community bakery.

Mass distribution of wheat and corn meal? Community bakeries and mills? What are ya, some kind of commie? /s

Funny to see MAGAs saying "We should feed Americans before we give food to foreign countries. We should take care of homeless veterans before we take care of refugees and asylum seekers" - as if there's something stopping us from feeding hungry Americans or housing homeless vets now. Well, let's be honest there - what's stopping us is Republicans, because those arguments are really just deflections, because they could actually care less about feeding hungry Americans or housing homeless vets and don't want to pay for anything because they only care about the wants and desires of megacorporations and billionaire overlords.

It's the same thing they do with gun violence, with Republicans saying "we don't have a gun problem, we have a mental health problem" to which I reply, "fine, then let's do something about mental health!" - at which the Republicans suddenly slip away and go hide in the bushes.

And a WHOLE LOT more private sector workers are about to get laid off as this reckless and poorly planned / executed Republican gutting of the government cascades out with all of its ripple effects and downstream impacts.

why would we need to fight wars? we have “shuttle diplomacy” and “diplomacy in action” @ State. And what happened to your “end/endless wars” bumper sticker in support of Cindy Sheehan et al.?

I know! I was somewhat skeptical that the parties have realigned but watching democrats validate GWB and Karl Rove’s worldview really has blown my mind.

You are pretty stupid. Without USAID there will be more failed states and chaos. Then we can all watch as Trump continues to bombing and use military force at the cost of hundreds of billions like he is doing in Somalia right now. Every strike in Somalia cost north of 150 million.

You want to save money and stabilize a good chunk of the world? Kill have money and aid for Israel.

If you think this is primarily about layoffs, you're mistaken. This is about the shredding of the constitution and our governmental norms. Signed, someone who was laid off in 2009 and isn't an idiot.

I think it is how one defines a failed state - I would not classify most of Africa as successful states.

So, when does it stop? Not my problem if they are fighting between each other and corruption.

No man, or country, is an island. We are securing US peace by improving the state of other countries, thereby reducing instability in those other countries which leads to violence. That's the idea - but you seem to think that shutting down USAID is a better idea. That all the violence would stay "over there" and never come here.

What about poverty in rural areas of blue counties?
