I'll take a stab at the Top #5, after one week. 1. Robinson 2. Langley 3. Madison 4. Yorktown 5. McLean/West Potomac |
Week 2 -2024 VA Boys Class 6 Rankings
1. Robinson (1-0) Results: Def. Yorktown 8-5 Analysis: Robinson took it to Yorktown jumping out to a 5-1 lead at halftime and holding off a late Yorktown comeback effort. The Rams dominated faceoffs and their defense looked tough (goalie was lights out). Busy week ahead with three games on tap. Lucky for the Rams they are all at home. McLean and Langley should be good tests, while Alexandria City should give Robinson’s backups a chance to shine. This Week: 3/20 vs. McLean, 3/22 vs. Alexandria City, 3/23 vs. Langley 2. Madison (1-1) Results: Lost to Riverside 8-7 (OT), Def. West Potomac 20-13 Analysis: Madison controlled the faceoff X but couldn’t generate enough offense to take down Riverside in an overtime thriller. The Warhawks looked good but not great in the loss to the Class 5 State Champs. Put up 20 goals in a bounce back win against West Potomac, but surprisingly gave up 13 goals to an only average Wolverine offense. They should have no trouble with Westfield before a critical matchup with Yorktown on Wednesday. This Week: 3/18 @ Westfield, 3/20 v. Yorktown 3. Langley (1-0) Results: Def. Centreville 17-2 Analysis: Langley jumped out to a 12-1 halftime lead over Centreville and then coasted to a 17-2 win. The Saxon’s offense has been humming and their defense has been stingy, but they will be tested this week and will need to bring all they have when they face the Rams on Saturday night. A win over Robinson could vault Langley into the #1 spot. This Week: 3/20 vs. Westfield, 3/23 @ Robinson 4. Yorktown (1-1) Results: Def. Centreville 14-1, Lost to Robinson 8-5 Analysis: Yorktown trounced Centreville but started slow against Robinson and could never catch back up. Offense looked flustered and couldn’t find the back of the cage against a stout Rams defense and goalie. Huge week ahead with games against Madison and Oakton. A win against the Warhawks keeps the Patriots in the mix at the top of the rankings while a second loss will see them potentially fading out of the top-5. This Week: 3/20 vs. Madison, 3/22 @ Oakton 5. Battlefield (2-0) Def. Briar Woods 13-7, Def. Independence 6-4 Analysis: The Bobcats came out fast against Briar Woods and jumped to a huge early lead before letting BW chip away in the second half. They followed that up with a surprisingly close and low scoring win against an Indy team that was looking overhyped. Putting up only six goals restoked concerns about their offensive firepower. Battlefield’s schedule shows them with a month off before their next game on 4/15. This Week: No games 6. McLean (1-0) Results: Def. Chantilly 11-4 Analysis: McLean handled Chantilly fairly easily with balanced scoring and solid defense. Chantilly looked very sloppy but rebounded against Lake Braddock so the McLean win may have been better than it appeared initially. Big week ahead with three games headlined by a Wednesday match at Robinson, followed by an easy one against Centreville and an interesting game with neighboring private school O’Connell, which looks to be especially weak this year. The Highlanders need to win two and not get blown out by the Rams. A win over Robinson will cause chaos in the rankings. This Week: 3/20 @ Robinson, 3/22 @ Centreville, 3/23 vs. Bishop O’Connell 7. Cosby (1-0) Results: Def. James River 14-3 Analysis: Nice start for Cosby with an easy win over James River. One more tune up game this week against Powhatan before a huge showdown with Atlee next week. This Week: 3/18 v. Powhatan 8. Freedom South Riding (1-0) Results: Def. Stone Bridge 13-3 Analysis: Freedom started slow but stepped on the gas and defeated Stone Bridge easily. Another easy game with Lightridge before a potentially more challenging game against a Dominion team that has historically been strong, but looks to be slightly down this season. This Week: 3/19 vs. Lightridge, 3/20 @ Dominion 9. Oakton (2-0) Results: Def. Woodson 10-4, Def. West Springfield 12-4 Analysis: Oakton was hot after getting overlooked in the rankings last week and came out with something to prove. They took down Woodson and West Springfield without breaking a sweat and looked fairly good in the process. The Cougars should cruise against W-L before they get one of their biggest tests of the season when the Yorktown Patriots come calling. A good showing against Yorktown would show Oakton may be the #2 team in the Concorde district. This Week: 3/20 vs. Washington-Liberty, 3/22 vs. Yorktown 10. Hayfield (2-0) Results: Def. South Lakes 13-7, Def. South County 10-5 Analysis: Two solid wins got the Hawks off to a great start and they have the inside track on second spot in Region C. Hayfield face a Chantilly team that is riding high after a win over Lake Braddock on Friday night. A win there could lead to an undefeated season given how easy their schedule gets from there on in. This Week: 3/20 vs. Chantilly Also Considered: Patriot, Westfield, West Springfield, West Potomac |
Excellent analysis as always - think that looks exactly right based on last week's results. Thanks again (and in advance) for doing this again this year - now the season has really started(!)...
Look forward to the great games this week - especially all the Top 5 match-ups... |
How very FFX centric of you. |
Yorktown is in Arlington County |
The only two non-FFX county teams even arguably in the top-5 are Yorktown and Battlefield. Yorktown is in the top-5, Battlefield is barely in my top-5 but not on this poster's list, although understandably. West Potomac is not close in my view. |
Yes I'd give significantly more weighting to the comprehensive/detailed/substantiated analysis from the official rankings vs. this random top 5 "stab" above... |
Much better. St. Albans up 6-2 at the half. |
Is Riverside starting fogo playing? |
I think not given how much better Saint Albans looked on face offs. |
Riverside lost 10-5. Sloppy game offensively. Too many turnovers to count. They were on defense which felt like the entire game. |
STA was sloppy too. Lots of dumb plays, offsides, sub patterns off, missed defensive assignments and missed open shots. On a positive note for Riverside, their goalie is good. |
Yes, felt like they should have lost by a lot more. Not their best showing. |
Neither team brought the best out of the other. |
He played (#26) and took several of the FOs, but not all of them as he did in the past. |
