No matter what those with their head in the sand (or another orifice) say, it is now officially as bad as the 90s.

This is entirely the fault of the hyper-progressive council, the mayor, and the policies They have put in place to “defund” or hobble the police department.

The council tried to go even more radical (pro criminal) with their last proposal for, as they called it, “criminal justice reform” based on their twisted view of what “equity” means. Their plan was so radical, not even President Biden would step in to save the plan.

This council and administration are the WORST!

And people are dying as a result of their incompetence.

In some ways, worse. Then crime was more localized and followed patterns and was focused on the drug trade. Now, far more random, in broad daylight, in front of witnesses, with LE nearby, none are a deterrent.

There is another hospital fugitive, too. Although, had he gotten to PIW, many violent offenders have walked out of there, too. Lucky Ward 3 and residents of Cathedral Commons.

This is such utter BS. Sure, crime in the 90s was "localized" if that "local area" was "everywhere that isn't Ward 3."

And the vast majority of homicides are still done by gang members and drug dealers against gang members and drug dealers. Nothing about the patterns has changed.

The amount of broad daylight crime has definitely changed as has the scale of organized retail theft (often involving violence) and carjacking (several victims have been stabbed or shot recently). So, disagree.

Not true when you’re at 200+ by October.

And violent crime discriminates against no one in this city in 2023. We’ve had multiple murders of random citizens on the metro this year.

Every stick up that has people on this board sprinting to their computer to say “just give them your wallet and phone” comes with the threat of murder.

Wake up and pull your head out.

This. Here EoTP in the 90s. Metro was safe. Crime was mostly after dark or when there were not lots of people around. No longer the case. A guy was just shot in a robbery/carjacking in Columbia Heights after leaving Marshalls, right near the Giant, on Sunday. People need to stop normalizing this, it's NOT normal, not even for DC.

Nobody will care and nothing will be done unless it’s a JKLM school. Or a private.Y’know, the schools with the children of Somebody or Someone.

FWIW, there wasn't really much public outcry after a drive-by shooting outside Jackson-Reed, which forced a lockdown of multiple other DCPS schools right nearby, so I don't know if your basic premise here -- that people will care and do things if the fancy upper NW schools are affected -- is correct. (For that matter, there wasn't really much lasting public outcry over the mass shooting at Burke, either.)

How many dead black men and shot kids will be enough for the Harriet's Dream and DC Justice Lab activists? Their rhetoric has not let up despite all the blood on the streets, much of it children's...don't be distracted by their words, look at the reality of their actions.

It's not incompetence. There is a LOT of money behind this and DC Justice Lab has even drafted recent crime legislation and talking points. Their funds are very difficult to trace. Are eugenicists behind this and deflecting with market tested pretty words? The "activists" are the tail wagging the dog. The results are a horror.

A lot of the activists' narratives are falling apart, even CNN is countering with reality. Who benefits from all the fostered chaos? There is money pushing these ideas and they have captured the Council. That has to change.

The last time we were on this murder pace was 1997.

Now you have to say "it was worse in the 80s" because your 90s line has gone to hell.

Let's look at exactly WHO is dying as a result of their consistent ACTIONS and rhetoric, not incompetence imho. Why, the same folks they claim to champion! Of course, outcomes matter far more than deflecting words. Are eugenicist funders the dark money behind DC Justice Lab's murky funding?

They will never let up. This is a religion for them. Stop treating them as rational decision makers.

Also, please recognize costs today don't matter so much in pursuit of what they believe is a generational mission.

That is a very good point.

The so-called “criminal justice reform” movement is coming 100% from the left, with much of the money provided by The Open Society Foundations.

The result of the current “criminal justice reform” (including money-bombing prosecutor elections for those who dismiss most violent crimes) has been a massive increase in not just crime, but a flood of: crime victims.

These crime victims are overwhelmingly people of color, lower SES, and female.

None of it makes any rational sense. It's clear that "restorative justice" has made life far, far worse for people living in cities, particularly for people of color living in low income neighborhoods. It's baffling. In most cities, it's a fairly small group of criminals that are responsible for the majority of violent crime. They are known to the police and the criminal justice system. The average murderer in DC has 11 felonies. They are not strangers to the system.

So why not arrest them and take them off the streets - say after felony number 4 - and allow people to live their lives in safe communities? Why would that be controversial?

I'm increasingly convinced that progressives like Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau are eugenicists. Almost every single one of the 209 murder victims in DC so far is black. Among progressives, I have noticed a profound lack of empathy for the black victims of violent crime. In fact, progressive lawmakers and district attorneys - particularly white progressives - seem hellbent on ensuring that urban areas remain as dangerous and unsafe as possible. No one gets prosecuted for anything in DC. Criminals have free reign here.

Why?

Eugenics is the only thing that makes sense. I've come to believe that this is how progressives are choosing to get rid of "less desirable" people. At the root of most progressive "reforms" lies a profound racism. It was like an a-ha moment. That explains the astonishing tolerance, even encouragement, of murder and violent crime among progressives in places like DC.

I don’t know what’s causing the increase in crime, but I am skeptical that it’s as simple as policing policies. They didn’t have these policies before previous waves of crime.

I think it is just as likely that it’s about waves of particular drugs, or the delayed effect of economic conditions, or I don’t know what.

Was there a big drop in incarceration rates? I also feel like there has been a big shift in surveillance and other tools to prosecute crimes that had to have an impact. Cell phone records, etc.

The carjackings I think are about the changes in theft deterrence. Car thefts are harder to do so carjacking goes way up. That’s a problem but not caused by policing.

You all are voting for progressives on crime. Vote for people who are not progressives on crime. I do, but until we ranked voting no one I vote for stands a chance.
