Barbie trailer

Anyway, I loved the movie and so did my 12 year old son.

When you get a rave review from the notoriously hard to please New Yorker film critic, and you take in $155 in like two days, you’re doing pretty okay as a filmmaker.

People, just don't pay money to see it if you don't buy into the hype. I'm not. And I have nothing against Barbie. I don't think Barbie has any significance in a girl's life, unless she didn't have great role models in real life. That's the truth.

The bolded is a great summation of what this move was about. I can't remember if it was a line in the movie or a review I listened to that said the same things you said and then concluded with: "and we put them all into a doll."

As far as Barbie not having any significance in a girl's life - you sound like my really high minded law professor that took pride in telling us that he had never seen Star Wars when the prequels came out in the '90's. It doesn't make you look intellectual. Just out of touch.

You’re out of touch. Barbie may have been significant for you and PP but wasn’t for so many girls. I’m brown and I didn’t want to play with a doll that was made to glorify racist, western standards of beauty.

Same deal with Ted Lasso. The show sucked but has a weird cult fanbase. Probably a lot of overlap with the Barbie fans.

You't not allowed to not like Ted Lasso!

You're allowed to not like whatever you want to not like. The problem is when you insist that everyone who does like it is lying or paid off or whatever - and the other problem is that you come into threads where people are enjoying themselves talking about a show or movie they enjoy and you just insist on responding to every comment with another paragraph about how much you hate the show and how bad it is, and blah blah blah.

Yeah, you didn't like it! Barbie or Ted Lasso! This sort of millennial-style wholesome/emotional dramedy is not for you! That doesn't mean you need to center yourself in every conversation about them!!

You got it exactly the wrong way, boo. It's more like you express even a mildly disapproving opinion of the "fave" show or movie and people act like you killed their dog or "just don't get it" .

Who is doing the centering?

You. Still you. You don't get it - as you just explicitly said - but you're still making it all about you.

love the "you don't get it" crowd.

There’s already talk of at least two more sequels!!

Well, the reviews have been strong? I’m not sure what you mean by mediocre.

Also, it appears that this is going to be one of the most, if not the most, highest grossing films in history. (when you look at it worldwide.)

It definitely glorified A standard of beauty. A white, western, ridiculous-to-achieve standard of beauty. But it's A standard. Not THE standard. It's OK for white people to have A standard of beauty that they stupidly try to achieve. It doesn't make it racist. It makes it white. And that's OK. White people can exist.

You're seeing that in here? I'm not seeing that at all. There's the conspiracy theorist who is upset that Mattel is trying to make a buck. It's ok if Disney or Dreamworks tries it, but Mattel is going a step too far! Who do they think they are trying to make money off their toys? And the weirdo with the secret squirrel handshake who likes to leave movies and provides paragraphs and paragraphs of what makes her tick. I see lots of posts of "it was just ok" with nobody even responding, much less to tell them they just don't get it. We must be reading different threads.

Yeah, you aren’t reading the same thread at all? You actually maybe can’t read, idk. This is all persecution fantasy.

It’s a discussion board, my friend. It’s not a “universal adulation for Barbie” thread. Personally, I am annoyed because based on the trailer I really thought I’d love it. But based on the behavior of the Barbie cultists, perhaps it’s better I didn’t like it. You people are a bit scary.

Can we switch to new thread now that people have actually seen the movie?

Seems like she's pretty significant for you, since you built an identity around hating her. I don't know about, and certainly don't seek out places to talk about, whatever toy you played with as a kid.

"it's boring" I understand. There is no accounting for taste, different life experiences, etc.

But the people who rage against it but can't actually point to anything bad or wrong about it, that makes me want to see it even more.

If you don’t want people to comment on your negative opinion then don’t comment at all. Some people liked it and some didn’t but you seem offended that some liked it. Get over it.
