Politifact's "Lie of the Year" for 2014 is various exaggerations about ebola. I think it is pretty funny that some of DCUM's regular right-wing posters were prolific spreaders of these lies, including spreading them on DCUM. It would be nice to see a few of them admit their error and, maybe, learn from it. But, I won't hold my breath. We will likely be told that Politifact is a Marxist front operation that is the propaganda wing of IS, etc., etc.. Of course, we will be told this by the same people who routinely remind us that Politifact's 2013 Lie of the Year was Obama's "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it" statement. |
I think its good that free market medicine tamped this down. In spite of the CDC and Obama. You progressives think it was about ebola itself. Truth is, it is larger than that. This was a clear example of how government cant handle crisis, and can actively create it |

I will openly admit I posted about the need to close borders, and that I was wrong. You can confirm by my IP address, if you want to.
I don't think that I was lying, but I was certainly overreacting! I did, however, argue vehemently against posters saying it was airborne and other foolish, unscientific stuff like that. |
Uh? You might have to explain the history that you just rewrote a little more fully. But, I guess one way to react to having been a purveyor of the lie of their is to tell more lies. None of the things the scaremongers claimed would happen, happened. Dance around that fact as much as you want, but the truth remains. |
| Sigh... there were some of us libs who were concerned. I for one thought it would be much easier to contract. I bet we'll see another domestic case resulting from this outbreak but since none of my family works in healthcare or travels to West Africa, we seem safe. That said the situation in SL is completely out of control and US media doesn't report as much as it could. |
| Even Glenn Beck was not concerned what he was concerned about was the idiocy of government first allowing it here and how the CDC were idiots in their response |
As one of your resident right-wing trolls, Mr. Steele, I don't recall spreading any "lies" about Ebola here---a significant outbreak was always a very low-probability scenario in my view---but I don't view PolitiFact's article as particularly compelling. I will freely grant that the odious McCain told a whopper, but the criticisms made of the statements by George Will (who I am no friend of) and Rand Paul are pretty weak. Politifact admits that Will's scenario was "theoretically possible" and basically bangs on Rand Paul for not being sufficiently nuanced. From there, debunking sources like "InfoWars" is pretty small beer. I believe there is a lot more uncertainty surrounding many of these issues than Politifact implies---its worth noting that there is some evidence that at least one strain of Ebola HAS gone airborne in the past, albeit one that was harmless to humans---and the current outbreak spread much more widely and rapidly than typical Ebola outbreaks. There was certainly cause for concern about the low-probability/high-consequence scenario of an outbreak, and Politifact's suggestion that those who were concerned were "lying" is misplaced in my view. Of course, anyone who freaked out was overreacting, I quite agree. |
| I admit it...I was one of the worst. |
| But the Honduran flu is another matter !^^^ |
Our government can handle a crisis. Conservatives might soil themselves, but Obama's not here to change your diapers. |
Yet no Ebola in America. |
|
Actually, I thought both right and left media were equally responsible for the hysteria.
The best media report on Ebola that actively calmed my fears was from Fox News reporter Shepherd Smith when I almost succumbed to ebola hysteria and considered cancelling travel. Here's the clip, the reporter did an amazing job explaining Ebola. http://fox13now.com/2014/10/16/news-anchor-the-ebola-message-everyone-needs-to-hear/ |
So Obama's Ebola czar's manipulation of the media happened via free market? No. When the hysteria was raging out of control, the government stepped in and calmed the waters. It worked beautifully. |
+1. plus one significant reason all except for two Ebola patients treated in the US survived is government funded research to developed drugs. Ebola is not exactly an illness where drug companies are willing to invest billions for drug development (rich countries do not have Ebola and countries that have it have small outbreaks once in a while and anyway cannot pay), the government (NIH and other agencies) have funded for years reseach that led to the drugs (still not on the market) that were used on patients. same thing for the vaccine. if we had to rely on the free market alone, we would have plenty of drugs for erectile disfunction and zero for Ebola |
We still have a free market health care system |
