Academic at Landon and STA

Anonymous
If you remove the kids or if you placed both schools in the same area, which has better academics. I tend to think that STA gets better students because of its location (No real public school option for DC residents). Landon gets good students but not great students because it competes with The W schools in MoCo. Any thoughts?

If you set aside his height, his speed, and his talent, I tend to think I'm just as good a basketball player as LeBron James. Any thoughts?

Are there good teachers and programs at both schools? Sure.

Does the make-up of the student body matter too in how academic a school is? I'd say yes -- students learn from each other, are pushed by each other, and if the overall class is stronger theoretically more and more difficult material can be covered.

So, can you really divorce who the students are from the academic tone of the school? I would say no.

The question is whether the teaching quality at Landon is on the same par as that of STA? Do both schools have the same level of academic offering?

Top students at Landon are just as smart as those at STA.

Where the schools differ is the rest of the class. Looking at the college placement, STA has a stronger track record.

I tend to to think Landon sends more kids to larger state universities where STA will send more kids to very elite small liberal arts schools.

Probably a Landon alum!

There is no comparison to the academic aptitude of the STA student body to Landon's. STA has also a far better academic reputation and teacher credentials.

It has nothing to do with location. Landon is not a terrible school, but it is nowhere near STA.

Landon has two or three kids in their top of their class that would be ranked in the top ten at STAs.

This is so silly. The schools are very similar in academic offerings and teaching. The high end of both schools are similar (the kids). I would say there is less pressure at Landon and less cut throat competition. For some kids, I guess they might need or like that. My son was admitted to both and we chose Landon because we thought the atmosphere was not as crazy intense. It's intense, but just not at the same level from what we gathered from friends and visits to the schools.

If you cant handle the academic pressure at STA, go to Landon. We dont want you.

It might explain why in recent years, why a few boys from STA have left and enrolled at Landon.

My son looked at both schools and loved both schools. In the end, he went to STA after getting offers from both. It was a very hard decision for him.

I would agree that you CAN learn just as much at both schools if that is your focus. You can be equally as challenged and intellectually intrigued at Landon as at STA. The difference I think lies in the rest of the students - overall STA boys have higher test scores and academic ability than the overall student body at Landon. STA is more academically focused. Its one of the reasons that Landon has better sports teams and athletic success. There is room for both and frankly, I see advantages to the Landon model that STA lacks.

I do think that the standards for admission to STA (grades, SSATs, recommendations) are higher (based solely on anecdotal evidence, admittedly). Also, I am only addressing the middle and high school years as those are the ones with the more stringent admission requirements.

We know many boys who applied to both schools and none of those boys were admitted to STA but not to Landon. The opposite however is common, offers of admission to Landon but not to STA. I do not think that boys who are admitted to both automatically pick STA however. In many ways Landon's model is a more well rounded approach and its not uncommon for boys to choose Landon.

A very fair analysis
