Lactation consultant tongue tie

Anonymous
I'm looking for a lactation consultant that can diagnose subtle forms of tongue tie. I read that it is often difficult to diagnose properly and some pediatricians or lactation consultants miss the less obvious forms if tongue tie. I'm also looking for a lactation consultant that can show me how to use a supplemental nursing system. I am suffering from low milk supply and have tied pumping but my pump yields are really low (1 to 2 ml) even though I've even pumping for two weeks. I saw a lactation consultant twice and she seems at loss of how to help me. She recommended compressions while breastfeeding, supplementing with formula and pumping on each side after feeding. Been doing that for two weeks and the pumping doesn't really give me any milk. Lactation consultant just told me there is nothing that she can do to help me and that I should just stop pumping and continue supplementing with formula. Baby doesn't have any latch issues and is fine switching from breast to bottle. However I'm reading that babies often an switch easily in the beginning but then they start having problems later on

By the way I posted earlier this week about having low milk supply so here's my update going to obgyn tomorrow to rule out any medical issues though I doubt there is one

I don't have a LC to recommend but Dr Earl Harley at Georgetown is an expert at this so I would see him for the diagnosis.

You need a more motivated LC! Try the Breastfeeding Center, I saw Nancy and she was very nice.

I would just forego the lactation consultant and consult a doctor who can actually correct it if it needs to be.

I don't know where you are located, but the ENT practice at Children's Hospital in DC does both tongue tie and lip tie evaluations. My DS is having lip tie surgery next week to correct an upper lip tie that is preventing him from latching to nurse. His pediatrician already clipped his tongue tie, but said I needed a specialist for the lip tie.

If you are in Ashburn, Kidz Smilez does evaluation and correction

My DS#1 had severe tongue tie and could barely swallow before it was clipped.

This doctor's website is also helpful

The doctor that runs the site will let you take a photo of your baby's mouth and send it to him and he will evaluate it for you.

PP here, I called Earl Harley about my DS, but was told he no longer does tongue tie corrections.

Oh, just wanted to add, if you are near College Park, MD, Dr. Eduardo Armenta does tongue tie, he's my pediatrician I mentioned above.

Good luck!

Where are you located? I have a great guy at GBMC outside of Baltimore and he works with my LC

Pat Shelly at the breastfeeding center on K St. We didn't have problems with tongue tie, but DS was an inefficient nurser. She helped me get set up using an SNS while I was pumping and establishing breastfeeding and I felt she was very supportive of my needs and concerns.

I would highly recommend Susan Howard from VHC. She runs the BF group and is an ICBLC. She does LC visits as private practice.

Also anyone at the BF Center. Both Susan at the free VHC groups and 2 LCs at the BF Center identified a tie. My ped and a ped ENT that we waited 2 weeks to see did not see evidence of a tie. Fast forward 2 more weeks and I went to Ashburn Children's Dentistry and they corrected a severe tongue and even more severe lip tie.

Ashburn Childrens Dentistry, Dr Rothman in Alexandria and Dr Harley are the go tos for this in the area.

Good luck. This is hard stuff but it can and will get easier.

Ania Gold with Bethesda Breastfeeding. She diagnosed my sons tounge tie and showed me how to use a nipple shield and feed my son with a syringe. I'm sure she could show you how to use a sns.

I second the recommendation for Susan Howard. She runs a private business as a lactation consultant, but does free group breastfeeding question and answer sessions at Virginia Hospital Center (Women and Infant Center lobby classroom) on Wednesdays at 12 and Thursdays at 10:30. She diagnosed my daughters posterior tongue tie at one of the free groups. I then followed up at Ashburn Childern's Dentistry and they confirmed, and then corrected it. As Susan says, many pediatricians are either not up to date or just not trained in this area. I would definitely recommend seeing Susan!

Lori Schubert was amazing. I nursed for 16+ months with both my kids after having tons of problems before consulting with her. She is certified also.
