Why does FIL douse himself in cologne?

Anonymous
Is it because he doesn't have a good sense of smell anymore?? I can't exactly ask him, but every time he takes a shower and get ready he bathes himself in cologne. It stinks!!!

Ok, thanks for letting me vent!

Perhaps he has a medical condition that's suppressing his sense of smell? I used to have sinus issues and had no idea how much my sense of smell had disappeared until I had surgery and suddenly everything smelled/tasted different and much stronger.

People tend to lose their sense of smell as they get older. And men don't have as good a sense of smell as women overall. So it probably doesn't smell as strong to him as it does to you.

Tons of people do this who aren't even old. I know you must have smelled women doused in perfume as well.

FWIW, a 40-something woman wearing a heavy perfume got on Metro at a station in Arlington last week and sat down in the car in front of me. The scent was so overpowering that I seriously thought I was going to have an allergic reaction, and I don't usually react to perfumes or colognes. I do wish that people just understood that a little bit goes a long way!

Really? I'm 29 and have not experienced this amongst my friends. Most do not wear any type of scent.

My uncle does this, and I don't mind that much. It makes it easy to shop for him.

Outliers mirror each other.

My father has started to smell as he has gotten over age 70 - he showers daily, uses the same shampoo and soap that he always did - I guess it is an age thing. He is aware and self conscious about it. Perhaps something similar is going on with your uncle and that is why he wears a lot of cologne.

I'm 18:25, and I guess you're talking to me. My uncle is 70 now, and as long as I've been buying gifts for him (20 years, maybe), he asks for cologne or aftershave. My aunt says 'Buy the cheap one! You're paying $12 [for his fave kind, which I considered cheap anyway]?? No, get him the $4 stuff in the grocery store! He loves it!' and he does!
Sure, it could be that he smells anyway and wants the cologne to cover up his inherent stink. To me he smells the same as always.

Sorry, I was not directing that at you, poster 18:25 - I was answering OP's question, but I accidentally said "uncle" instead of "FIL."

You think, as a 29 yo, you're the demographic this poster is referring to?
