My father has started to smell as he has gotten over age 70 - he showers daily, uses the same shampoo and soap that he always did - I guess it is an age thing. He is aware and self conscious about it. Perhaps something similar is going on with your uncle and that is why he wears a lot of cologne.
I'm 18:25, and I guess you're talking to me. My uncle is 70 now, and as long as I've been buying gifts for him (20 years, maybe), he asks for cologne or aftershave. My aunt says 'Buy the cheap one! You're paying $12 [for his fave kind, which I considered cheap anyway]?? No, get him the $4 stuff in the grocery store! He loves it!' and he does! Sure, it could be that he smells anyway and wants the cologne to cover up his inherent stink. To me he smells the same as always.
