Does anyone have a good crock pot mashed potatoes recipe that does not involve cream cheese?
Everything I see online has cream cheese but I dislike cream cheese so the thought makes me queasy. Thanks! |
| Me too! I would love to figure this out before Thanksgiving but I can't stand cream cheese. I will be checking back to see if anyone can help. |
| Mashed potatoes are so easy, you don't need a crockpot. Just peel them and cut up into chunks, or not if they are red, and put them in a big pot of water. Boil for about 15, until soft. Drain, leaving about a 1/4 cup of liquid. Add butter, milk, and cream cheese or sour cream. Mash or blend and serve. Very quick and easy. |
I was thinking the same thing. |
| I'm a huge crockpot fan, but this just seems stupid. All you do is boil potatoes. |
| I think the idea behind crock pot mashed potatoes is not that making regular mashed potatoes is so hard, but at an event like Thanksgiving, it can make it easier to get everything warm on the table if your mashed potatoes are prepped in advance and ready to go from the crock pot rather than mashing them at the very last moment when you're also trying to make gravy, get other dishes warmed, carve the turkey, etc. |
I have made mashed potatoes and then put them in the slow cooker to heat them on Thanksgiving, so they don't need to take up oven space. I make them as above, but just use milk and butter, no cream cheese or sour cream, with a little salt and pepper to taste. I've also found the last few years that russet potatoes seem to give a really nice rich flavor when they're mashed. I used to use yellow potatoes, but I prefer the russets now. |

Thanks for your help. Perhaps we have lots of company coming. And lots of other things on the stove. Go back to the school's forum if you need to be unpleasant. |
This is very helpful. Thanks so much! A great idea. |
| OP I found a recipe at Allrecipes.com for crock pot mashed potatoes that basically says make them first and then put them in the crock pot. So, that's what I'm doing! |
| I use half and half and butter, no cream cheese. |
What is this schtick? It's stupid. |
| Thanks everyone. Great ideas. We have an extra family coming this year and I'm just trying to balance out spending a lot of time in the kitchen versus seeing people and then of course how best to utilize our 4 stove top burners. Lots of really helpful ideas on here (particularly how to get rid of the cream cheese). thanks! |
Thank you. Between the guests, the kids, keeping the toddler from unsetting the table, making the turkey, stuffing, vegetables, serving everything, socializing with my guests, and actually trying to enjoy myself, anything I can prepare and cook in the morning in a crock pot would be helpful. Thanks to those with helpful suggestions. |
