You seem so invested in this story... why do you insist like it is the one true story?

You're addressing at least two different posters, fyi.

I posted that it seemed to be the accepted narrative that Kate followed William to St. Andrews but that I'm open to any refutation. That the opposite of being investing in "one true story."

Kate could have also gone there for the education.

Hilarious. She decided to take a gap year and attend a dramatically less prestigious university than the one she was planning on attending for her education?

Global ratings rank Edinburgh higher, but heavily lean toward STEM, which she was not pursuing.

Twice is multiple times….

Meh- this isn’t any big whoop. Lots of couples breakup while they’re young and still dating and trying to figure things out. But yeah.. still waiting on proof of any affair or any friction at all after marriage

What proof are you expecting? A sex tape? Certainly you aren’t expecting William and Kate themselves to confirm?

Now that would be the day. The palace is so in lala-land they can’t even be honest about William’s lack of hair.

Is that supposed to be William?

It looks a little. . . German.

You do understand that the British Royal family is German, with the exception of his paternal Grandfather, Philip, who is Greek, Russian, and German and his paternal great grandmother who is Scottish.

I always figured that Kate's interest in William started as a schoolgirl crush when she was a teen and that when she met him for real at St. Andrews, that crush grew into real affection.

I'm so curious how much of the impetus was Kate's and how much was her mother's/parents'. Kate changed colleges to go where William was, so there was a strategic pursuit, and a pretty notable one at that. It's unfathomable to me that you'd let your child change colleges in hopes of meeting a celebrity they liked, so was Carole just an unusually indulgent mother, or was she calculatingly ambitious?

Maybe I've missed media reports about her over the years, or maybe Carole Middleton hasn't been of interest enough to American media, but it sure seems like there's a story there. It would make a great mini-series on cable channel! Rags to riches air hostess/small business owner, raises oldest to snag heir to throne, clearing the path to socially and financially advantageous marriages for the younger siblings.

The middletons were not British upper class. Even if Carole Middleton had been calculating enough to be thinking of her daughters prospects at college, there is no way in hell she would have thought prince william was on the table. Her coaching once he became part of Kate’s circle may be a different story.

Listen, one of the whacko women at my gym paid a fortune to send her daughter to St. Andrew's because she thought she could snag Prince Harry. Harry couldn't get admitted to any university, much less St. Andrews. Daughter is now working as a receptionist at the London office a UAE company because they wink over work visas. The daughter majored in art history and cannot be hired anywhere because of lack of connections and work visa. Carol Middleton at least had a clue about what she was doing.

It looks like a young Prince Phillip to me

Wowza, you are right!

Wait...wasn't Phillip supposed to have a big 100th birthday celebration in June 2021? Did they steal his coin and give it to William because he died?!

What a dreadful comment. Shame on you.

It wasn’t Oxbridge lol. She turned down the University of Edinburgh which is also much better than St. Andrews.

So if she got into a great university, maybe shes a lot smarter than people on this board seem to think?

I literally have no idea how smart she is or isn't, but someone's ability to make public speeches isn't an indicator of their intelligence.

I don't think anyone was questioning her intelligence. It's more her lack of intellectual interest and effort to learn about issues she's taken up in a more than superficial way. I'm sure she's perfectly capable.

I do think she's shy or uncomfortable with public speaking, but so was Diana and Diana worked on it.

+1. Also, it’s not public speeches. Being an articulate communicator is one sign of intelligence, and it’s one area where Kate has notably been lackluster. She has had zero career ambitions, displayed zero intellectual interest in her purported areas of interest, and overall just doesn’t come off as particularly bright. Which is totally fine! She has a lot of other great virtues.

Well she is an accomplished pianist and that takes a good deal of mental acumen.

How do you have any idea about her level of intellectual interest? She is proficient in the topics she discusses and I’ve heard her talk - and demonstrate her fundamental understanding of - issues ranging from mental health to child development. You are making stuff up and it’s bizarre.

As for her career aspirations - she has a career. It’s being a working Royal and patron for myriad causes. That’s her job and will be forever, assuming she remains married.

Lastly, what do you expect from her public speaking? Like all royals, everything is scripted and she does fine. Kate’s no worse than Will. And she always seems engaged in her visits and with her hosts and the public at these events. What more do you expect?

I mean...but its easy to see that's what they did. Minimize the 40 and add a 1 - 0 instead of a 4. Also remove the W and input a P. Its a perfect switch.

It doesn't make sense at all to distribute a 40th birthday coin. The 40th birthday is not significant in any way. And William will be getting Prince of Wales and 50th birthday coin within the next decade.

So there is no reason to mint a 40th birthday unless it was already in-production and they had to scrap something else last minute...

Unfair comparison here. Kate, as future queen and prominent royal family member, can't say anything controversial or political in her speeches. She must, by definition of her role, be pretty boring. Diana became a good public speaker after her divorce when she had more liberty to do and say what she wanted.

Yes, I do know that, but the coin doesn't look like him. Honestly, if you didn't know what it was, you'd never guess that it supposed to be William. It's like they took the photo it's based on and ran it through Aryan propaganda machine, then stamped the coin with the edited image.

Sorry. That was my visceral reaction when I first saw it. I used the word German as a euphemism (perhaps misguidedly) to avoid being incendiary. I'm not suggesting it was intended. I think they tried to idealize his features-- make him a little more handsome-- and inadvertently created something unfortunate. They should have just made an honest rendition of his likeness.

No, Diana started working on her public speaking skills immediately.

No, Diana was a good public speaker because she kept doing it, read her prep work, retained it longer than a minute and cared. Her work numbers put her son and DIL’s numbers to shame.

DP. What are actual examples of things she’s supposedly proficient in? I know you’re not referring to the very basic and generic things she’s said about the early years.

I personally do not think she’s dumb. I think that in order to make her seem more like Diana they have focused on events that have to do with children and I don’t think that’s an actual area of interest of hers outside of her own children. Which is true of a lot of people. Diana worked with children before she even got married. I would think they could have given her a more art heavy patronage load and perhaps some things focusing on the elderly as they love her.

The current rank has nothing to do with the reputation the school had when she went there 20+ years ago.

Nothing, she's proficient in nothing. She goes to children's events and says 'baby brains become adult brains'. I truly think she's an idiot and they 'assigned' her kids, the younger the better, because they can't talk back and critique you. On top of that she has provided nothing of any substance in 10 years while 'working' on early child development.

Remember when she was leaping in to 'save' broken Britain around 2018? Never materialized.

And that's a completely bogus ranking. Not even British people consider St Andrews the 4th best school in the country. Oxbridge are unilaterally tops, and then it's some tossup between Imperial, UCL, LSE, etc. Even in its own country of Scotland, Edinburgh and maybe even Aberdeen and Glasgow are better than StA.
