Pediatric dentist office with TV monitors

Anonymous
Looking for a pediatric dental practice near Bethesda where they have tv monitors that a child can watch during a filling procedure. I have heard that some practices have ceiling-mounted TV's? My child is very anxious and has sensory issues, so I am hoping the TV could provide a distraction. Thank you!

Good lord.

OP, I don't have an answer for Bethesda, but I can tell you that the monitor, the weighted blanket, and a 'worry bar' (that's what we call the sensory sticks that I've gotten for my daughter) have made a HUGE difference for us: we didn't have any of these options at our previous dentist in DC, but we moved out of state and our new practice has the monitor (with headphones) and the blanket, and our child got through three major challenges just fine.

A really good pediatric or general dentist will be able to tell you a practice that features this even if they themselves don't: I'd also call an OT and ask, or you might even try the Lab School and see if they have an answer.

To the first poster who responded to you: perhaps you were having a bad day or perhaps you don't have experience with special needs children and treatments, but I found your comment singularly unhelpful. Do I wish that television weren't so prevalent in our lives, generally? Of course. Do I wish my child didn't need distractions (for that matter, do I wish she didn't need dental work) to get through what's 'normal' for others? You bet. Did I EVER think I would be posting "yes - this'll help your child from freaking out to the point that the dentist can't work on her teeth and that she won't have a variant of an anxiety attack before, during and after every appointment? Of course not. But it happened. Support -- including from strangers -- helps.

Good luck, OP.

Thank you so much, PP. These are the types of supports I had heard of, from a friend who doesn't live in this area - I wonder if they are less prevalent here. In any event, I'm glad that they helped for your child! I really appreciate your suggestions, and I will call my child's OT practice and the Lab School as well. If anyone else out there knows of a DC area practice with these types of aids, I would really appreciate the information!

There have been several threads recently about Special Needs dental practices. We recommend Lewis & Ensor.

How can he see it in the chair with the dentist or hygienist over the top of him? We have found dark sunglasses and noise canceling headphone with his favorite book to be more helpful.

Sarah ganjavi, but her practice is in Vienna

Dr. Tom Orlando in Bethesda. He has videos and has been good with our SN son.

This is common in the burbs where there is more competition for patients. We had a good experience with my ASD son at pediatric dentistry of south riding.

Our child is also anxious about everything medical-related, and Dr. Orlando has been great!

Not Bethesda, but since others clicking on this thread might be interested, Dr. Natalie Phaeton at Oasis Pediatric Dental in Falls Church City as all of the above. DD loves the sunglasses and tv. She does not have SN, but I think it has still been a calming environment.

You know what's funny about the second PP? That she clearly didn't have a lot of dental work as a kid. I used to lie there for hours WISHING there was a TV. It seemed like the perfect time for it and would have distracted me from the misery and anxiety of procedures. If there is one place in the world for a TV, it's at the dentist office - NT or SN kids would both benefit.

Amy Light's practice in Potomac has this (we drive out there from Bethesda). DS has had lots of dental work (inherited my teeth).
