OP, I don't have an answer for Bethesda, but I can tell you that the monitor, the weighted blanket, and a 'worry bar' (that's what we call the sensory sticks that I've gotten for my daughter) have made a HUGE difference for us: we didn't have any of these options at our previous dentist in DC, but we moved out of state and our new practice has the monitor (with headphones) and the blanket, and our child got through three major challenges just fine. A really good pediatric or general dentist will be able to tell you a practice that features this even if they themselves don't: I'd also call an OT and ask, or you might even try the Lab School and see if they have an answer. To the first poster who responded to you: perhaps you were having a bad day or perhaps you don't have experience with special needs children and treatments, but I found your comment singularly unhelpful. Do I wish that television weren't so prevalent in our lives, generally? Of course. Do I wish my child didn't need distractions (for that matter, do I wish she didn't need dental work) to get through what's 'normal' for others? You bet. Did I EVER think I would be posting "yes - this'll help your child from freaking out to the point that the dentist can't work on her teeth and that she won't have a variant of an anxiety attack before, during and after every appointment? Of course not. But it happened. Support -- including from strangers -- helps. Good luck, OP.
