HELP! I signed up for it and I'm sooo out of shape. And I can't back out now. I ran today and make it about .4 of a mile and had to stop to walk.
Ideas? |
| Website couchto5k.com I think that's what it is. |

What are your goals? Have you ever run before?
Remember - mind over matter. Running is 90% about the mind. Get good music. Develop a pattern - maybe run 3 minutes, walk 1, run 3, walk 1, etc. |
No goals, just finish it in under an 18 minute mile pace. That's when the course closes. |
| 18 min/mile pace is 3.33 mph. That is a slow walking pace. Just walk whenever you get tired. |
|
Lots of people will be doing a walk/run. Enjoy yourself!
Which run is this? |
It's a run in Illinois (we'll be visiting relatives). The FAQ on the website says: can you walk the 5 mile? Yes, as long as you are able to finish with under an 18/minute mile pace/90 minutes after the race starts. |
| Newport, RI also has a 5 mile turkey trot. It's really pretty seaside. |
| Isn't there one in arlington on t giving day? |
|
I don't think it's 5 miles. That's kind of an unusual distance. It is more often 5k and 10k.

Don't worry about it. Lots of walkers at races and even if you walk the whole thing you'll finish in time.
You will have so much fun and I bet you'll sign up for more
|
| That is a very generous mile time. You should be fine walking the whole time if you want. Just don't lolligag! |
This is a great start! Agree with others about the couch to 5k plan. You might consider doing a run-walk program (Galloway) or slowing to a very slow jog. |
I recommend the Galloway method for this. Run 2 min, walk 2, or run 3 min walk one or some variation. Easier on your body too and will prevent injury. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/run-walk/ |

What they said....your putting way more stress into this than you should. Take your time, do it at your pace. Get across the finish line and just enjoy it. If you have not done so go by your local running store (preferable not a Dicks or Sports Authority.....Pacers or other running store) and get fitted for some good running shoes. Don't make the mistake that most do and figure the Nikes, Puma, Adidas, Reebok, etc you have are fine.
Best money you will spend is on a good pair of running shoes that are fit to your stride. Will make it a more pleasant experience and help prevent or at least minimize chances of injury. ~N~ |
