how long after delivery?

Anonymous
Just curious how long DCUMers wait after birth to have sex. My doctor said 6 weeks, just wondering what's realistic!

Apologies if this belongs in explicit forum!!

Did you already deliver? I find most women who are anxious about this haven't had the baby yet.

You'll get lots of varying responses depending on the type of delivery, the type of tear, etc. For me we tried around 10 weeks but weren't successful until about four months. We did other things instead.

After my first (really bad tearing) it was around 3 or 4 months. Hurt for a full year.

After my second, 6 weeks.

Exactly the same.

OP here - I'm a week out. I'm not ready to test the waters so to speak, I was just curious to see what others' experience was. Thanks to PPs for your responses!

We waited 3 weeks but I had an easy delivery with no tearing at all.

We only waited 2.5 weeks. Easy pregnancy and relatively easy delivery. For some odd reason I still have not lost my sex drive. DH was glad but I've been shocked. I hear so much about women losing their sex drive during pregnancy and post-birth. I wonder why I haven't.

Perhaps your DH isn't a deadbeat like everyone else's and so you don't wind up hating him and, in turn, finding him physically repellant.

In all seriousness, it took my DH like 18 months to really GET IT - like how different things are with a baby, how schedule matters so much to kids, how fun it can be to put down the iPad/remote and actually hang out with our toddler, how no, it does not sound fun to go grab a couple of beers and watch football for 3 hours in a bar (well, it does, but it wouldn't play out that way). That had a huge effect on whether I wanted to have sex with him and not in a good way.

But to answer OP's question - six weeks. I had normal tearing and healed just fine. My doc said wait 6 weeks, so I did. It frequently hurt for at least a year after, but I think that was mostly psychological on my part (see above).

Congrats on your little one, OP.

It was always between really painful and not much fun until I weaned, but we tried starting about 2 months out.
