I'm a grammar nerd but the only one that really annoys me on DCUM is her's vs hers. Apostrophes don't mean "here comes an s". |
And I can't stand the over-sensitive types who confuse the straightforward truth with "being nasty." There was a poster describing that her husband hides his phone, travels for work often with little details shared, etc. I asked IF she thought he MIGHT be cheating, and several people called me nasty, rude, etc. Oh, OK. Or I had the audacity to suggest once that a lifelong grandparent relationship is different than that of a step grandparent relationship with older kids that started three years ago. That mere statement of facts was labeled rude, mean, etc. I hardly think it's rude to mention a pretty straightforward fact. |
100% agree |
+1 Sometimes lengthy, great discussions get deleted because a thread veers a little off-topic. So incredibly frustrating. Reporters should focus on trolls, not making sure that every single thread follows the rules 100% of the time. Work on your EQ, people. You're not robots. |
Agree. And the ones who report a thread for being in the wrong forum are really over the top. "This belongs in diet and exercise, not health and medicine!!" Can't they just ignore things they don't want to read? |
OP writes - my 4 yr old keeps fussing at bedtime and refusing to go to bed. Help!
Annoying poster - I don't allow fussing. My kids happily go to bed at 7pm even now that they are 16 and 18. Sleep is so important! |
I think it's partially because DCUM doesn't skew as crunchy as it used to. Not that crunchy people can't be a-holes, but there are a lot more "traditional" people here than there used to be. Just look at the way people discuss sex, dating, fashion, discipline, etc. The DC area is relatively liberal, but it isn't all that culturally progressive. I often come across posts that seem like they were written by the great-aunt who shares "remember when kids said sir and ma'am? remember when men were men and women were women?" posts on FB. |
Manners never go out of fashion. Not everyone that writes thank you notes and expects 'please, thank you' all of the time from children as they are growing up is old. I see a lot of just gross and nasty stuff being talked about like it's mainstream. Everyone that disagrees with slutty clothes or Tinder one-night stands is over the age of 30. |
*NOT everyone I meant. |
I am the PP who reports, and I would never have reported that. I stick to racist, sexist, etc. or mean. |
I am one of the Brussels posters. Thanks! I haven't lived in D.C. in at least a decade but DCUM fascinates me endlessly. I recommend it to anyone starting a family because I have never come across another parenting site half as useful. I love living in Europe but could easily come home. It's actually always been a fantasy of mine to live in Arizona for a few years. |
I don't mean to dual post, but I am the PP who reports, and I don't report posts like this. Most of what I report is racist or sexist. I like DCUM, and I won't scroll past those without reporting. I don't think I have ever reported a thread for being in the wrong forum. I also report when I think I have found a troll. For instance, the travel forum covid-19 troll started posting in health and medicine and I reported those posts (and I was correct it was the troll). I also report any post that says covid-19 is "just like the flu." For the mean ones, it's typically those posts that disparage whole groups of people without any substantive contribution to the discussion. I would report: "Teachers are lazy jerks who just want to stay in their PJs/work from vacation spots/whatever" or "Parents only want their kids back in school because they hate their kids/don't want to raise their kids/whatever." I would not report: "I think some teachers may have a view of the covid-19 risk in schools that isn't grounded in current studies" or "I think some parents may want their kids back in school because they are struggling at home." Jeff doesn't always agree with me on posts I report. |
Someone reported me for a post that I made regarding an incompetent Walgreens employee. It was not racist or sexist. Maybe a little angry out of proportion to the situation, but I can’t believe someone reported it. |
Agree 100% with both of you! |
The Biker poster is not annoying, s/he is exhausting. |
