Common Core question for proponents

Yes, the reason we have federalism is that a bunch of white men, almost all of whom were wealthy, many of whom owned slaves, thought it was a good idea in 1787 to set the US government up that way. They may have been correct -- but that's not the reason we have federalism.

Why does the color of the people who formed the government matter to you?

The founders were very worried about a central power (like England) running their lives. They really believed in LIBERTY and PERSONAL FREEDOMS. Note the importance of the BILL OF RIGHTS. This was not all about being white and wealthy. It was about wanting FREEDOM from England's tyrannical rule. The Constitution tries to prevent the kind of tyranny that suffocates. They were correct my friend. Freedom is always better. People will fight for it.

Here's a solution and something the feds can do:

Make all learning materials open source. Set up places for low income people to use computers to source the materials 24/7 (for any age---not just K-12). Make preschool free for every citizen (nothing to do with income at all). Give free lunch to everyone. Make people who are paying taxes feel like they are getting something so that they continue to support taxation (which is actually being threatened by these people going to private schools and homeschooling). If education is important, this is the kind of access the federal government should give. Tweaking standards and putting in testing requirements is working from the wrong end. Outcome based education does not work. You have to start with the input, not the output.

Yes, they really believed in LIBERTY and PERSONAL FREEDOMS -- for people who were white and male and owned property.

^ And I know you are about to tell me that CC does this.

Yes. Those were the times unfortunately. But that mistake does not negate the idea that liberty and personal freedom are important. There was a war later because of those mistakes. As I said, people will fight for freedom. It's a very strong ideal. We should not give up on that ideal just because wealthy white people didn't get it completely right in 1787.

^ And we need to stop fighting our past demons. We need to move forward.

Homeschooling is a joke.

The requirements around it are so loose that any moron can homeschool a kid. We've had some enter public, only to leave in a hot second b/c they didn't have the skills to keep up.

a tragedy really

Anecdotal. Source please. I know people who were homeschooled who are now doing quite well in college (and one is a PhD scientist in a government lab). It should actually be easier to homeschool now because there is so much material available via the internet. I know families who do it and then supplement in high school by doing dual enrollment at NOVA. There are so many resources in northern Virginia for homeschoolers. It's truly incredible.

Look at the homeschooling laws. The best source of information about the homeschooling laws by state is the Home School Legal Defense Association, but they're a pack of scary fanatics, and I'm not linking to their page. In some states, you don't even have to notify the school district that you're homeschooling.

But nothing changes. The "freedoms" that libertarians and other right wingers think they are fighting for are propaganda sponsored by the Koch brothers via the Heritage Foundation, Cato Institute, Competetive Enterprise Institute and others, which throw around all the buzzwords of freedom, liberty and responsibility while in fact taking away liberty and personal freedoms by consolidating power in the hands of corporate barons. They've fallen for it, hook line and sinker. Others of us know better.

And is it better to consolidate power in the hands of the government that is run by those corporate barons?

Ha, thanks for exposing yourself as the right wing nutjob that you are.

"OMG, it's a GUBMINT TAKEOVER!!!"

That's really your only argument here - that you hate the Black Kenyan Muslin Communist and everything he's associated with.

OMG. A radical nutjob!!! I voted for Obama both times. I have a biracial child. I do not hate based on color. I don't believe Obama is a Communist, but I'm starting to wonder about YOU based on the posts you just made.

When people start with the personal attacks, they have lost the argument.

The argument was already lost and over when the PP started trotting out all of the lame Tea Party "gubmint takeover" talking points, IMHO.
