There is acceleration in math as you can pick algebra in 6-7th or at least currently. The problem is there is no math outside statistics at some schools outside calc bc and no science apps or other things. They push in at some schools but few kids actually graduate with ib degrees so they need to look at that and dump it. If you want MV, you have to go to MC or go without. And, if you go without you may not have enough math classes to graduate as they don’t allow independent study or other virtual outside MV. |
They are going to roughly double the number of seats in SMCS programs (3 times the number of programs but each one will be smaller.). How is that eliminating any meaningful cohorting? |
Because that is going to end up as a lottery with a very low cutoff for eligibility, a non-expert teaching staff, and over reliance on online platforms for whatever they claim the “focus” is. |
DP but what out of this do you think won't happen? |
What are you talking about? They have said multiple times these will remain criteria based programs. |
Doubling the seating = dilution to certain extent. This is acceptable. Doubling the seating and divided from 2 to 6 regions and trying to find 3X of qualified teachers with minimal training = complete failure of everyone. |
You need super smart in their higher level only and they do have the money as they get more every year. It’s how they choose to spend it. You don’t need a scientist, you need someone who loves and understands science. The people who have come in as professionals are ok in knowledge but not great as teachers in out experience. |
There are enough smart kids to fill the seats. |
Lol yeah what “criteria” would that be? |
I don’t think MCPS has any intention of creating more tracked programs for everyone. the “magnets” will be lotteries with everyone in the pool who can meet very low criteria. |
For one, you probably didn't read my previous post. SMACS curriculum discourage AP and smart kids need to be extremely self-motivated and disciplined to self-study all STEM AP courses (magnet curriculum only teaches only 1/3 - 1/2 of the AP content but to a much greater depth). And for two, you still didn't respond to my question about teacher: where to find 3X of magnet teachers? We couldn't even find one for a couple of years currently. |
Please stop sharing misinformation and freaking people out. They have said nothing that indicates this and everything they have said points in the other direction. |
What criteria is being used currently? |
May have been on another page in this thread - but no real mention of the gem of MCPS - Poolesville HS. What's the plan there??
I'm glad DD got to enjoy the full Global experience before they mess with it. No way that program can be replicated in 6 regions w/o any teacher training. It's one of the most unique programs in the country and it's been a blessing and honor to be a part of it. |
It's in Region 6 with Clarksburg, Damascus, Poolesville, and Quince Orchard. |
