Kamala Harris for President

Most Americans believe that abortion should sometimes be illegal and sometimes be legal. Most think it is sometimes immoral, and sometimes acceptable.

But here’s the thing: Most Americans also agree with the substance of the Republicans’ 2022 “national abortion ban,” according to the latest Gallup Poll.

Gallup’s writers chose to tout the post-Dobbs shift in favor of abortion in this poll, but even after this shift, here’s a telling fact: only 37% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal in the second trimester, while 55% say it should be illegal.

Lindsey Graham’s proposed “national abortion ban” kicked in at 15 weeks. The poll asked about the “second three months of pregnancy,” which begins in the 13th week.

Again, this isn’t new. Gallup has always found that a majority believe second-trimester abortions should be illegal.

So why would the public turn against the GOP for advancing a bill to ban second-trimester abortion when the public — by a nearly 20-point margin — thinks second-trimester abortions should be illegal? Again, it was spun by the Democrats and the national news media.

“National abortion ban” sounds like a total abortion ban. And the left-leaning major news media, where more than 90% of reporters and editors are far left on abortion, generally adopted the Democrats’ spin.

Check out this CNN story. It simply adopts the Democrats’ poll-tested wording in the headline, and makes you read until paragraph 11 to learn that the ban only kicked in when the baby was 15 weeks in gestation.

Most Americans are not where the pro-life movement is, believing that the government has a duty to protect human life, even in its earliest stages. But most Americans are where congressional Republicans are: wanting to ban abortion after the first trimester.

So why aren't they running on it? But enjoy, it seems you think you have a winning issue on your hands.

"While the 2016 platform mentioned abortion rights 35 times, the 2024 platform mentions it only once. "

You can read her website since you clearly have internet access. But to sum up why I’ll be voting for her— she’s running on protecting my right and the rights of my daughters and nieces to access healthcare and not bleed to death in bathrooms or land in the ICU because we’ve been denied basic care.

How is she going to do that? It's a state-by-state basis after Dobbs, and she as president will have no control over the states that have stripped the rights of your daughters and nieces. She isn't Congress and the president isn't a monarch. What is she going to do? The rights are already stripped - Democrats whom I voted for let that happened when they refused to codify Roe.

It's a serious question. How is she going to do that?

We’re hoping that Thomas and Alito kick the bucket so she can appoint new SCOTUS and change the balance again.

Her platform is “hope two people die while my party controls the Senate”?

You can’t be serious.

And, again, as someone who votes for Dems…the conservatives are smart enough to time their justices’ retirements. Unlike RBG.

Seriously, for the party of constitutional democracy, pushing through this nominee without an open convention and then making a bunch of empty promises that cannot materialize under the constitution, this is sending quite the message.

If you want moderates to stay home in November, this is a great way to do it.

Like I’ve said, you’ve got the internet, read her website.

For me, for my husband, for every parent of a daughter I know, it would be sufficient to vote against Trump to protect our bodies and our children. You want more? Start reading.

I’m a different poster — you’re replying to multiple people over this discussion. I haven’t seen your comment linking her campaign site.

FWIW her site is so new that Google hasn’t indexed it. I had to find it through the Library of Congress site.

On her site (https://kamalaharris.com/), there is no platform or policy positions listed. If there is another site, I can’t find it. It’s just a lead capture page for cash and volunteers.

BTW, why do you assume that I am a different demographic than you are? “Othering” people with a different viewpoint who are in the same big tent…again, if you want moderates to stay home in November, you’re doing a great job.

LOL

Trump hasn't be elected in 2024 either, he has been nominated. Harris will be nominated too. And you bet she will run on Roe v Wade and that will make a big difference.

Protect from what? Look at the state of this country and the world after 4 years of democrats running things.

Losing their mother when a wanted pregnancy goes septic?

Losing their fertility when an ectopic pregnancy isn’t treated?

Eighteen years of child support for our boys when a college hookup gets pregnant and can’t terminate?

And god forbid— a lifetime connection to a rapist if one of our daughters is denied an abortion. Rapists do not lose parental rights.

No thank you.

Nice fear-mongering.
Guess this is the most important issue to you. The right to kill a fetus.

Most of us are more concerned with the daily challenges that the Democrats have brought to our country.

NP. Emergencies happen during pregnancy ALL THE TIME. I had an emergency surgery during my first trimester… these laws around abortion make doctors hesitate and keep their hands tied and it’s scary. The fetus can’t have more rights than the mother.

55% of white women voted for Trump in 2016. He’s good.

And he only pulled 42% in 2020. He ain't got this.

And that was before Dobbs

You realize that millions of women agree with Dobbs, right?

The Dems don’t know how to read the room. They can’t fathom that most Americans agree that federal dollars shouldn’t fund abortion and abortion should be left to the states and banned after the first few months.

The Dems are crazy and think most of the country agrees abortion should be federal law and made legal even to the 9th month if need be. Most Americans do not agree with the Democrats about abortion at all

This could possibly be the most deluded take on this message board all year. This is award-winning bad.

It’s not award winning bad. I posted stats to back up what I’m saying. Democrats are masters of deception and pretend Republicans want to ban abortion entirely when all they want to do is ban it after the first trimester which is lockstep with what the majority of Americans believe. Only insane liberals want to baby kill full grown infants at 7-9 months of pregnancy Like is being done in New York. That’s infanticide as the baby is viable and can sometimes outlive the abortion

Excellent stats. Beautiful stats. Why won't voters get with the program?

Stay tuned for November .

Oh, stop it.

Carville was a guest on a podcast yesterday to support Harris enthusiastically and to extoll how many talented candidates and staffers are in the party.

He also has a weekly politics podcast with Al Hunt.

You don’t pay attention to him, so don’t put words in his mouth.

I think you’re arguing with the wrong PP.

Because no conscientious parent I know is risking their daughters, nieces, granddaughters life and health this election year. That’s my demographic.

And it’s To their absolute detriment is my point.

They need to be talking money . In the words of James Carville, “It’s the economy , stupid”

I don’t hear any economic talk from the Democrats or the words working class or family at all. All I hear is Roe v Wade and saving the soul of America . Apparently countries have souls but 7 month babies do not

Childless was a low blow . There’s a growing amount of childless child/free millennials especially . Aoc has talked about not wanting kids .

It’s typical of Republican mean spiritedness and only valuing women for being mothers and not much else

Actually childless is a stupid blow. If says to the 1/3 of Americans in blended families that our step parents / step kids aren’t our “real” family because of DNA. And by extension, that gay families, adoptive families, surrogates, etc. aren’t real families, because DNA. That the only way to parent is to push the kid out yourself— screw years of raising, loving, going to ballgames, helping with homework and walking me down the aisle. For example, my stepfather, who is obnoxiously pro Trump, but has called me has kid since I was 6 and was the only real father I had. And who never had bio kids. I wonder how he feels to know that relationship doesn’t count and he isn’t actually a father?

And who TF is JD Vance to say he isn’t my dad?

You think only liberals live in blended families and feel like I do?

That is a lot of interpretation. I’m glad your dad is your dad and you were lucky. Many are not.

No. It’s not any interpretation. She has long said she considers her stepkids to be her children too. They say they consider her to be a parent figure and call her Mamala. JD Vance and MAGA say— but those aren’t her real kids that matter in making her a parent (not sure what the leap from that to unable to govern is, but they are making it). If everyone in that family says she plays a parental role, the “it doesn’t count because she didn’t give birth” is straight out offensive to the millions of families where a loving parent figure didn’t give birth.

Is JD Vance too stupid to realize she has a close relationship with her stepkids? Or, is he too stupid to realize that saying that relationship doesn’t matter is very offensive to the millions of step parents and step kids in her family’s situation?

Everyone understands this. They are just being nicer about the situation than you would be. He left. Give him his dignity and don’t kick people while they are down.

+1 I also think the "Biden is a hero" is a bit overblown. In the regular world, you're supposed to recognize you're not up to the job and retire in advance of it becoming an issue. But PP is correct that he peacefully agreed to leave one of the most powerful positions in the world. That's a good sign of a healthy democracy (and certainly a contrast to Trump and his January 6 destruction and refusal to accept the election results).
