VA resident. Plans to go to grad school for sports science-related career. Chose these schools based on size but still D1 and campus life.

Davidson without question. The students absolutely love it and the education is incomparable. Plus, the alumni network is incredibly strong. Congrats!!!

It has a great vibe, good weather, nice town, good academics. But I admittedly know zero about Richmond. If one is in state or DC wants closer/smaller, then Richmond.

Hmmmmm. I’m the upthread Spider spouse and also have a cousin on the faculty at UGA. These are two very, very different schools. Small & private vs big (VERY big) and public.

Can you share a bit more about what DC might pursue and perhaps what has lead to it being between these two discordant universities?

Interested in business. Kid would be interested in UMich but we prefer CMU over UMich because of distance from home

Finances not an issue

For business, Ross is the way to go. Ann Arbor is only an 8 hour drive, fairly short flight from the area. What school does your kid want to attend? That should be more important than your preference for distance.

Totally agree that Davidson is best school and amazing education. But specifically for Sport Science look hard at Wake. For some reason it attracts kids of famous people including sports stars. And has an AI sports science lab well funded. Would only pick that over Davidson if positive of sports path. Would pick Davidson and Wake over other too unless cost is factor.

Male. Govt/history/politics/IR-related. In-state VA. Doesn't qualify for any aid. Willing to pay if a distinct advantage over other options.

For Govt/history/politics/IR-related: Georgetown.
That's a tough one because of Pomona. It's the only one that might be worth the extra dollars. Otherwise UVA.

Finances are a consideration - got scholarships everywhere but Cal Poly, Pitt and VA Tech. Physics major.

His favorites so far are UMD or VA Tech or W&M but he’s visiting Rochester next week…

For a mechanical engineering major which school would you select.

UMD Honors (instate tuition and great engineering program, but not a great social fit at all)

Princeton (generous aid, Ivy, loves the campus, and residential housing, it's okay as far as social fit)

Northwestern (likes the campus, school culture, great social fit, and engineering program, but hates the weather)

Rice (the best social fit, loves the school culture, and student is a native Houstonian, but the engineering program is not the strongest out of the group)

We are super lucky but no clue how to pick. Admitted to Yale, Princeton, and Duke. Undecided major. Any advice is appreciated.

A kid should know if they want Davidson or Wake--they are quite different. I would pick based on this and not on the academic quality (which is roughly equal). I toured with my twins and one was 100% in camp Davidson and the other was 100% in camp Wake. We toured a lot of schools and these were some of the only ones where their opinions diverged to such a degree.

I didn’t see your previous post. My child mainly applied to large state schools. Got into a number of them and likes UGA the best of the ones she was accepted to. We encouraged her during the admissions process to consider some private schools and she liked Richmond. Doubts about Richmond are that it is small (but loves the large beautiful campus) and lack of a college town. Doubts about UGA include the culture and that is super large. Would have preferred a school the size of UVA but was WL out of state. Richmond seems like a better education in terms of contact with professors, small classes, better advising etc. But she loves the rah rah culture at UGA.

If into the Business programs at all these schools then that's pretty incredible. Academically Ross, Stern and Tepper are top tier.
I would recommend Ross due to UM having the best college experience, all the kids there seem to absolutely love it.

Your family seems to have a good read on both schools but you didn’t elaborate on areas of academic interest or finances? Is UGA in-state? Is $ a consideration? Is distance from home an issue? Might weather be a factor? It gets hot in Georgia! (Richmond too but it’s more the humidity that sneaks up on most).

Those things asked…it is possible to “culturally” shrink a big school (particularly as an upperclassman and you get more involved in your major). And if “sports rah-rah” is a big deal, it’s really hard to beat SEC spirit although UR has successful sports teams and you can literally get front-row seats at games and have real interactions with their invariably smart athletes. The one thing Richmond is not is a college town, certainly not like UGA dominates Athens.

Sounds like you’ve already visited both and I do not envy your DC’s decision-making.

We have not yet attended the admitted students program at UR but will. The UGA one was not helpful. A lot points in favor of UGA but the school seems like such a hassle because of its size.

Might I suggest either of these two UR threads (so as not to derail this one further):

I have posted in both and will gladly try to answer any additional questions you (or your DC) might have. And, no, I’m not UR staff 🤪 but am married to an alum and have lived in RVA for many years.
