UGA Univ of Richmond (Have pretty much eliminated other options)
UGA
Cost or other reasons?
It has a great vibe, good weather, nice town, good academics. But I admittedly know zero about Richmond. If one is in state or DC wants closer/smaller, then Richmond.
Hmmmmm. I’m the upthread Spider spouse and also have a cousin on the faculty at UGA. These are two very, very different schools. Small & private vs big (VERY big) and public. Can you share a bit more about what DC might pursue and perhaps what has lead to it being between these two discordant universities?
I didn’t see your previous post. My child mainly applied to large state schools. Got into a number of them and likes UGA the best of the ones she was accepted to. We encouraged her during the admissions process to consider some private schools and she liked Richmond. Doubts about Richmond are that it is small (but loves the large beautiful campus) and lack of a college town. Doubts about UGA include the culture and that is super large. Would have preferred a school the size of UVA but was WL out of state. Richmond seems like a better education in terms of contact with professors, small classes, better advising etc. But she loves the rah rah culture at UGA.
Your family seems to have a good read on both schools but you didn’t elaborate on areas of academic interest or finances? Is UGA in-state? Is $ a consideration? Is distance from home an issue? Might weather be a factor? It gets hot in Georgia! (Richmond too but it’s more the humidity that sneaks up on most). Those things asked…it is possible to “culturally” shrink a big school (particularly as an upperclassman and you get more involved in your major). And if “sports rah-rah” is a big deal, it’s really hard to beat SEC spirit although UR has successful sports teams and you can literally get front-row seats at games and have real interactions with their invariably smart athletes. The one thing Richmond is not is a college town, certainly not like UGA dominates Athens. Sounds like you’ve already visited both and I do not envy your DC’s decision-making.
We have not yet attended the admitted students program at UR but will. The UGA one was not helpful. A lot points in favor of UGA but the school seems like such a hassle because of its size.
Might I suggest either of these two UR threads (so as not to derail this one further): https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1195528.page https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1182410.page I have posted in both and will gladly try to answer any additional questions you (or your DC) might have. And, no, I’m not UR staff 🤪 but am married to an alum and have lived in RVA for many years.
