Coaching staff at Visi

Western Albemarle has been trying to play STAB for years a 15 minute drive and STAB won't play them, even though STAB will play Richmond Collegiate 3 times a year and running clock them by halftime.

The discussion centers on the WaPo top ten list (which STAB doesn’t fall within) and I would argue the opposite. Broadneck, Oakton and Dominion have everything to lose by playing GC, SR, and other near-top ten DMV teams. Big deficit losses would knock them out of top ten contention and undermine the public / private program balance narrative they (and the WaPo writers) want the public to believe exists in the DMV. Not a knock on VA publics - they don’t play in the same competitive leagues the privates do. Just play the best to be the best and let the scores settle the debate.

Agreed. Can u say which club the Visi applicant plays on? I hope we can get more than just one good player at 2028.

There are a bunch of good players who are applying. The real question is how many plan on attending if accepted?

Pride midfielder with sister at Visi is a likely acceptance.

But why would she go when there is no coach? No preseason when the other teams are already on the field almost everyday.

Her sister goes there. Maybe mom and grandma went there too. They could cancel lacrosse and she would still go there. It’s a lock.

These girls are in 8th grade. Even if Visi has to have a parent coach for one year next year it will likely effect the vast majority of freshmen next year as Visi only takes about 2-3 freshman on varsity. By sophomore year they should have it worked out so any ‘28 parent using this as a reason not to send their kid I think is being very short-sighted.

Should read “will likely NOT effect . . .”

Other teams are not on the field every day (at least not private Catholic schools).

Okay, good. Any other players likely to attend?

There are probably at least 2 NL players who will attend.

It's just not worth it except the absolute top publics. Especially when the top privates can play each other and potentially play solid out-of-state programs. When you already have to schedule weaker opponents from your own league, coaches want tough OOC schedules.

And yes, kids going to stronger HS programs just typically get better faster, generally. There is more competition day in and day out at practice regardless of the coach sometimes. That doesn't mean girls that can't and/or don't go to these HS can't be just as good. But as a whole, they just end up ahead of the game due to their spring. IMO, this is most notable summer after freshman year. Most kids that may not go to Visi b/c of the coaching will end up at another private.

Good stuff. I probably have at least one more Pride to add to the list.

“The first step is for the top Virginia publics and top area private schools to play each other in the spring. GC, SR, PVI and SASS should put Oakton, Broadneck and Dominion on their lists. Coaches are planning their schedules now and should make this happen. There’s ample time and room on the schedules for this to happen. Why these teams don’t compete when they are so close makes zero sense. Outcomes of those games would give the Washington Post the best data upon which to base its rankings.”

PP should look at the Oakton Turkey Shoot Out results.

The all-star game would not be close.

As for scheduling games, Oakton played and beat SSAS last year which was significant. Madison played SSAS the last several years, STAB in '22, and Potomac last season. Not sure about the other publics, but I believe the privates would be willing to schedule teams that can give them a competitive game.

The fact is that there aren't that many publics that can compete with the top tier privates, and there is a great degree of variability based on the year. Just look at the VHSL 6A State Champions the past 15 years. Hard to sustain excellence in a program with a public pyramid as you are geographically-locked and dependent on rec coaches (generally dads and moms)--even with really good coaching, and we all know that is uneven.

The top ten rankings have been established and according to the Washington Post represent the area’s best. They should play each other to determine if they are truly accurate.

WaPo rankings and All-met teams are a joke unless you are considering Wapo sales.

WaPo All Met girls lacrosse selections are now driven by subscription sales … break out the tin foil hats everybody.
